Thursday, April 3, 1874. Present _ Messrs Barnicoat -(chairman), the Bishop of Nelson, the Revs A. M. Garin, Buddie, nnd Thorpe, Messrs Broad, Campbell, Jessop, Fell, Goolstone, Wigzell, Jackson, Wastney, Smith, Holder, Cresswell, and Rout. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The report of the Committee on Augmentation was read and ordered to be published, together with tbe minutes. The further consideration of the report was postponed until next meeting. The Town Building Committee was authorised to settle with Mr Woolcot as to the amount to which he is entitled. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Rout, That en application from tbe inhabitants of Waiperna, Grey Valley, for a subsidy, together with a similar application from Mr Metcalfe of the Lyell township, be acceded to, on the usual conditions. . Resolved, on the motion of Mr Smith, That £4 10s be allowed feo the East Takaka School Committee to meet equivalent subscriptions towards the cost of a chimney for the new school there. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Broad, That tbe consideration of Mr Lloyd's application for a lease of No. 156, Westport Education Reserve, be deferred until Mr Roberts be again communicated with. Resolved,, on the motion of Mr Wastney, That the question of the amount of salary to be allowed to tbe teacher of. Lower Takaka BChool be considered when tbe September return is laid before the Board. '■ Resolved, on the motion of the Bishop of Nelson, That £2 10s be allowed to the Pangatotara Committee to enable them to pay arrears of rent of the schoolroom. Notices of Motion. 1. By the Bishop op Nelson: That £15 be granted to the Spring Grove Committee for the erection of porches or verandahs, both for tbß Spring Grove and River Terrace Schools, and also for internal repairs, the above application, by inadvertence, not having reached the Board when considering the annual grants. 2. By Mr Cbhsswell: That £310s be granted to the Stoke Committee to enavlo them to carry out the recommendation of tbe Central Board, with regard to the substitution of iron for shingles on the roof of the lean-to of the teacher's, house. 3. By Mr Holder: That from Oct. 1 1874, "the salary of the teacher at Foxhill school be increased from £60 to £100 per annum. Report of the Committee of the Central Board appointed to consider the Qobstion of Augmentations. '-„.?. To the Chairman of ;the Central Board. Sir—Your Committee,, after considering the very d.fflcult question of augmentations, that has so often engaged the attention of tbe Board, have come to the following conclusions: — ■--..' 1. That the augmentation of teachers' salaries, with come reference to the number Of children taught, ia in itself &ir and expedient, and affords an incentive to, and reward

for, the energetic performance of their duties on the part of the teachers. 2. That the principle just laid down, and -' heretofore applied to only the head teachers '>' in ""each school, should be extended to the assistant teachers, and that augmentation in all cases of new appointments of head teachers be divided between the head teachers and the assistants in the following ratios:— Where one assistant is employed, twothirds to go to the head teacher, and onethird to the assistant. Where two assistants are employed, threefifths to goto the head teacher, six-tenths I ofthe remaining two-fifths to the second, and four tenths to the third teacher. 3. That until the new^riieijiiiecomeß into operation, the sahj_y**of the assistant in Hampden-street school be increased by £12 rer annum, that of the senior assistant at Haven Road by £12, and that of the junior assistant at Haven Road by £7 per annum. 4. That no alteration be made in the salary ofthe mist- ess ofthe Preparatory School, but that the salary of the assistant at that school be increased ftom £27 to £36.
