San Francisco Mail.— -tip to the time of our going to press the Murray with the San Francisco mail was not , signalled. The delay in her arrival is of the greater consequence that she is" bringing the whole of the mails for, Wellington and the Middle Island, with a view tp their being transshipped into the Tararua, which is advertised to sail this evening for Wellington and the South. . , We understand that a prjvate telei gram bas been received stating that the Taranaki, which should have left Wellington for Nelson to-day, has .been compelled by stress of weather to put back to Lyttelton. Resident Magistrate's Court.— . Watman v. Hall. This was an action to recover £6 10a. upon a dishonoured cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Defendant did not appear. - It seems ' that a few days ago plaintiff took but a summons against defendant,, who, to stop proceedings, gave him the cheque in question, which was dated August lltb, but on the top were the word., "Tobe paid 17th August." On that, date' tiie cheque was presented and dishonoured. His Worship said that be . was satisfied that the cheque in reality amounted to a bill of exchange. He would give plaintiff pertnission to amend the particulars of his claim, and to sue for the amount of bra account against defendant. This was done, and judgment, was given for the amount claimed . and 13s. costs, with immediate esecu- ' tion. " ". " '! ' ', ". A solicitor at Halifax, named Cronhelme, was sentenced at the Bradford Sessions to two years' imprisonment for misappropriating a sum of £900 intrusted to hith by a client for a specific purpose. •.--;•, '._•--_.:-_.
