CITY COUNCIL.
Friday, August 21. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary stating that Mary Ann street being within tbe boundaries of the city, all damage caused to it by the sea must be repaired by the Corporation. The Public Works Committee was directed to look into the matter. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary stating that £70, part of the vote of £200 to the City Council, had been paid to their credit, the amount being of an equal proportion to that given to the Road Boards. A discussion ensued, it being agreed j tbat tbe Council did not stand in the same category as the Road Boards; that the sum of £200 was voted for the main trunk road to the Port; that more than that amount would have to be expended on tbe road immediately, and that the Corporation was fully entitled to the whole vote. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Government accordingly. A letter from the Provincial Government was received stating' that th* sum of £20, the proceeds of hackney carriage licenses, had been placed to the credit of the Council. 1 A dralt form of application requesting the transfer of the Gas and* Water Works was also received. His Worship said that he had received a telegram from the Superintendent stating that the Government would take charge of the Waterworks Loan Bill in the Legislative Council, and that he thought there was a fair prospect of its passing, but did not feel certain. Some discussion ensued with regard to the advisability of taking them over at once, during which the Mayor stated that at present they were heiog grossly mismanaged, and that the expenses now going on would have to come out of the rates. Ultimately it was agread to let tbe matter stand over for a week, when the result of the Waterworks Loan Bill would be known. His Worship said that ns the Council had now on hand a large quantity of bricks, the sewer from the Golden Fleece to Examiner-street might be continued. j On the motion of Cr. Burn, the Surveyor was instructed to get in tenders for the work by next meeting. A letter was received from Messrs Fell and Atkinson, as solicitors for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, offering the offices lately occupied by the Examiner Company as offices for tbe City Council at a rental of £64 per annum. Cr Fell having left the room after the reading of the letter, his Worship said he had inspected the building oflfered by Mr J. Levien as well as the premises of the Examiner Company, and thought tbe latter would be very suitable. On the motion of Cr Burn, it was resolved that the Mayor, Cr Percy, and the mover examine the premises offered by Messrs Fell aod Atkinson, and report at tbe next meeting. A letter was read from Mr Touet, containing a complaint against Mr John M*Caw, and showing tbe disgraceful state of the neighborhood in which he lived. His Worship said tbat the nuisance referred to was treated in tbe miscellaneous regulations that were about to be published. The Collector was instructed to send notice to the ratepayers in arrears that lSgal proceedings would be taken at the expiration of seven days. A petition being received from r esidents in South-street, asking that a drain might be made down the centre of the street, it was stated that as soon bb the sewers were completed the question of smaller drains would be considered. A letter was received from Mr Bradcock complaining of the tramway crossing at Saltwater bridge, and stating that in consequence of it his trap was broken and his own life and tbat of a passenger endangered. It was stated that Mr Crewdson, t\\e proprietor, was bound to keep all crossings in repair. Cr. Jennings called attention to the dangerous '« trench " where the tramway croased Waimea-street. The Public Works Committee was instructed to inspect all the tramway crossings. The Surveyor said tbat the' Harbormaster had said that the Council might have about 100 yards of Boulder Bank gravel for the roads. The Council then adjourned until Friday next.
