(Jjpef^thousand persona were present at (^*fe Choral Hall last night at a meeting held to consider Mr Vogel's resolutions. Nearly all the leading residents of the city were present, the Mayor presiding. The following resolution was carried amidst loud cheering : — That in the opinion of this meeting Mr Vogel's resolution for abolishing the provinces of the North Island, while confirming some of those in the South, is unjust and impolitic, and that the time has arrived when ?or the good government and credit of the colony the whole provincial system should be abolished and the land revenue income become Colonial revenue. The announcement of the passing of Mr Vogel's resolutions in Wellington was read while Mr Firth was moving the fire t resolution, and was received with hisses. It was determined, however, to proceed with the business as originally intended, and the formation of a Reform Association was suggested, with the object of forming committees throughout the colony to agitate by addresses, and pamphlets, and using influence at elections with a view to abolishing the provinces. Captain Daldy denounced as an insult the offer of £25,000 by Mr. Vogel while the province contributed a quarter of a million to the Customs revenue, and Canterbury had a surplus of half a million which she could not expend. Messrs. Macmillan, Barton, Ireland, R Lusk. and others spoke.
