Lurline and Papapa are reported to have suffered a good deal from the voyage. Lurline will not be sent to Fydney, but is being reserved for the Melbourne events. New teas are moving off steadily at advanced rates. Madame Arabella Goddard proceeds to Dunedin via Melbourne, after performing at Batbnrot. The brig Ellen Norris is totally wrecked at New Caledonia. A young man named Alexander Cairns attempted suicide, first, by cutting his throat, and then by drowning. A Chinaman has been found hanging to a tree in the Creswick ranges. Edward Ainley, produce merchant, has been convicted of forgery, and sentenced to three years. The Sandhurst dividends for the week amount to over £18.000. Business i*» very dull, and nothing doing. There remain fifty -me entries for the Melbourne Cup. Tbe horses scratched are:— Ace of Trumps, Sir Belvidere, Electricity, Calumny, Here Goes, Propbe-, .Queen of Clubs, Sea Spray, Misty Morn, Sunlight, Sanco, May King, Maid of Avenel, Calabar, Macday, Echo, Dur wood, Excelsior, Strop, Ace of Fours. Conqueror, Bertram, fctoekbridge, Lelliante, Persian colt, Waimea, Novice, B.ink Bonny. Adelaide, August 11. Mr Ross telegraphs to Mr Elder: from Beltam to tho following effect -.—" Obliged to return through want of water; no rain has fallen for a long time; horses several times without water for days together. Great extent of scrub, and immense quantities of dead underwood prevented using camels for trying the country for water. The farthest course was latitude 30 deg. 25mins, longitude, 131 deg. 56 mins. Very few natives seen. On every occasion were making towards the sea coast.; are v<?ry wild. Was unable to get within speaking distance. Country traversed is high and open, with undulating table land of dense niurilga scrub and open murga forest, well graised.
