CENTRAL BO ARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, August 6 Present — Messrs Barnicoat (Chairman), Wastney, Campbell, Jessop, G,uir., Rout, Goulslooe, Bread, Bum, the Bishop of Neisou, Tarrant, Beuke, Talbot, Cresswell, Buddie, Holder, Wigzell, Jack.on, Mercer, Simmons. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the Finance Committee for 1874-5 was read and adopted, so far as the appropriations to the several Local Committees were concerned. The li.t of Committee allowances for 1874 5. as recommended by the Finance Committee, was also adopted. With regard to the recommendations of the Committee as to salaries, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Wigzell, '■ Ihat the further consideration of recommendation No. 1 be suspended until the question of augmentations be decided, but that Nos. 2 and 3 be adopted. (See Appendix with report.) Proposed by the Rev T. Euddle, and carried after a division, " That the request of the ineajoriulists living in Lower Wakefield to have the Spring Grove district extended to the southern boundary of sections Nos. 74 and 70, be granted." Ayes, 1 1 : Messrs Talbot,' Beuke, Cresswell, Wigzell, Burn, Goulstone, Tarrant, Broad, Jessop, Campbell, Buddie. Noes, 5: Messrs Holder, Smith, Wastoey, Rout, Bishop of Nelson. The proposition of Mr R. Smith, " That the petition for separation from the Lower Wakefield Education District presented by several inhabitants of 88 Valley be granted," was negatived on a divisiou. A letter was read from Iho Provincial Solicitor, giving his opinion that " a person haviug the right of private residence ia a public building for himself end family, or for himself alone, is liable to pay the Education rate." Resolved, on the taction of Mr Broad: 1. "That, in the opinion of tbe Board, ita printing and advertising should be equally divided between the Colonist and Evening Mail printingoffices. 2. " That the annual report and balance sheet be published in both papers, provided the annual charge do not exceed £10 in each paper. 3. " That the Board respectfully expresses its opinion that the advertisements calling the aunual meetings for the eleation of Local Committees should be inserted in both papers." Resolved, oa the motion of Mr Broad, *' That a Select Cou._ni.leo to consist of the Chairman, the Bishop of Nelson, the Revs. A. M. Gario, and T. Buddie, Messrs Wigzell, Goulstone, Rout, Wastney, R. Smith, Burn, and the mover be appointed to consider the question of augmentations, such Committee to meet at the Board-room on Thursday, August 13, at 11.30 a.m. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Tarrant, "That tho Secretary inform the Pangatotara Committee that the school-house, at present uninhabited, should be let (if possible), and the proceeds arising therefrom be handed over to the master, in lieu of rent." Notices of Motion. 1. By the Bishop of Melson: -'That £2 10.1 ba paid to tha Pangatotara Committee to defray the rent of the meeting-house (used as a school-room) from October 1, 1879, to March 1, 1874." i 2. By Mr Burn : " That several suggestions contained in the Inspector's report for 1873-4 be considered at next meeting, with a view to action being taken On them." Appendix. s . Nelaon, July 22nd, 1874. Report of the Finance Committee of the Central Board. Adopted August 6th. To the Chairman of the Central Board of Education: Sir — Your Committee having taken into consideration the estimated income and expenditure of the Board for 1874-5 prepared by the Secretary, find that tbe total amount available for repairs and new buildings during that period is £375 13s ld* They have therefore carefully gone through the lists of estimated requirements furnished by the several Local Committees, and beg to make the following recommendations, each of which is made with a distinct reference to the total amount disposable. Tbe sum applied for is given,^ in. every instance, after the name of each Committee referred to. 1. Town Committee, £74 lOs.— Tbat the Committee allowance for tho current .year be increased from £65 to £85, andvthat £10 additional be allowed for painting. 2. Suburban North Committee, £12 (including £5 additional for Committee allowance). — That nothing be allowed beyond the £7 already voted for a chimney. 3. Stoke Com-roittee, . £14 10s. — That £14 10s be attowed*-for repairing and painting the master's house at Stoke, with a "-suggestion that in repairing the roof, iron should, if possible, be substituted for shingle. 4. Hope, £29.— That £12 be allowed for painting the schoolroom and house at Hope, and for repairing the roof of the school. 5. Waimea West, £10.— That £5 be allowed for repairing the floors of the Waimea West schools. * 6. Upper WaEefield, £12 —That £4 he- allowed to Upper Wakefield : £2 for desks and £2 for partition.
