Wellington, August 5. Letters from their Loudou agent to Meflsrs Turnbull, state that it has been computed that there are one million more sheep in Great Britain than there were two years ago. Blenheim, August 5. Mr Weiss, of the Wellington English High School, has been appointed headmaster of the Borough School, and Mr Severne, of Nelsou, second-master. Auckland, August 5. Mr Macfarlane, of Auckland, is in town to-day lo dispute the election of Mr Von der Heyde, who it appears was naturalised only in South Australia. Mr Cassey has agreed to refer his salvage claim against the Miltiades to arbitration. He had put in a formal claim for £10,400, but now says it was a joke. Captain Daldy, in a strong Bpeech at the City Council on the irregularities of the revenues of the various provinces, and tbe inability of Auckland to provide proper means of Government, although contributing a quarter of a million to the Customs revenue, moved that the police protection ol the city is insufficient to prevent crime, Bnd that a telegram be sent to the Superintendent requesting him to bring the matter under the notice of the General Government.. The resolution was carried unanimously. New Plymouth, August 5. About noon yesterday the wind shifted to the south, which prevented the tide from comiDg so high as on the night previous. A strong south-easterly gale blew all last night, but abated considerably this morning. At the Waitara, a heavy fresh came down the river, and, together with tbe north-easterly gale on Sunday parted the steamer Paterson in two, making her a complete wreck. All hopes of saving ihe vessel have now been abandoned.
