THE DEPUTATION OF NELSON MEMBERS.
We are indebted to Mr A. J. Richmond for the following telegram: — Wellington, July 31. The deputation of Nelson members^ waited on the Premier yeslerdaj^ to urge upon him the advisability of proceediug with the Foxhill railway. Mr Yogel replied that, although Mr Rocbfort had sent in a most excellent survey, which showed that the construction of the railway was quifje* feasible, yet the cost would be very" great, about £8,000 per mile, nearlydouble the cost of any other railwaynow being constructed. Under these* circumstances, the Government could not be expected to proceed at once with the work, but thfey wouuld have more elaborate surveys and explanations made with a view of deviating the line, in order to lessen if possible the cost. Mr Yogel not only recognised this railway as a portion of the main colonial trunk line, but also considered, from all tbat has taken place with reference to it, that the Government is pledged to its construction. The deputation then brought forward two other subjects, namely, increaaiDg the bonus Nelson is to receive to £10,000 ; and aiding companies on the goldfields by money lent on the security of their plant and machinery but Mr Vogei could not see his way to consent to either of their propositions. The Nelson members are to meet Mr Richardson to-morrow, with reference to the line of railway, and the importance of Mr Rochfort'a proceeding with the survey with as little delay as possible.
