A Sunday Observance League, with a very influential committee, has been formed with the object of agitating for the preservation of the sanctity of the Sabbath, including tbe closing of public institutions on tbat day. Lyttelton, July 30. The immigrants per Northampton, who arrived here ou the 6th of June, were released yesterday from the quarantine station, except a few invalids aud attendants. Hokitika, July 30. The rush to the Greenston« is proceeding. Gold has been struck in a shaft behind the terrace previously opened on four feet depth. The prospects are excellent. The wash is estimated to be ten feet thick, and other shafts are being vigorously proceeded with. Dunedin, July 29. The Otago Daily Times publishes a letter from Mrs Howard to a friend in defence of her proceedings as immigration agent, She says she has sent many excellent small parties hy the Caroline and oilier vessels, and that she accompanied the Carnatic immigrants from Ireland to the London docks. In conclusion sho cays that she may bo unjustly deprived of her commission, but uothiug can deprive her of the satisfaction she has experienced in assisting the worthy poor, and helpiog the prospects of Otago by sending good labor, both male and femab, in every class of industry. She says also that when the people of Osago became acquainted with the facte, they will do her justice The letter has caused a good deal of comment. Port Chalmers, July 29. The Albion arrived from the Bluff at seven a.m.
Bluff, July 3d. The brig Carl, from Lyttelton to the Bluff, struck on a rock at the mouth of the harbor. The rocks appear to have gone through her bottom. The wreck, which was abandoned, is insured in the New Zealand Office.
