To the Editor ov thk Evening Mail. Sir— -The Editor of tho Lyell Argus in calling attention to an advertisement in his paper, says: — "A reference to another column will show that the upcountry residents are very much in earnest in their agitation for the immediate construction of a dray-road, and that they invite our co-operation. Our telegrams to-day contain the news that the Nelsou Loan Bill has been introduced and read a first time. Now it is very cert. in tbat nothing would tend so much to strengthen Mr O'Conor's hands (or whoever may have charge of the Bill), as the presentation of the petition contemplated by our neighbors, and we therefore anticipate that the requested assistance will be most cheerfully accorded." Now, I wish to suggest that these remarks are applicable to us of the settled districts as well as to the people of the Lyell, and although the Loan Bill referred to is not likely to pass, still the memorial will nevertheless be important and useful, inasmuch as it will tend to ensure a sufficient portion of tho proposed advance to be expended in the completion of that much-needed piece of work—the dray-road between Nelson and the Nelson South-West Goldfields. — I am, &c, J. G.
