LOVE AND SUICIDED
An inquest was held in Auckland oh Tuesday, Judy 14, upon* theu body^jf " Arthur "^orsnaO, 3wh'o\ wlis x fo^d " drowned, before Dr Philsoo, Coroner. Mary Ann Carroll deposed : I am a washerwoman, and reside in Aber-crombie-street, and am unmarried. I I "« acquainted with deceased for seven" years. When^l first knew bim he wai steward of tbe s.s. Kennedy. We were both at Nelson at that time. About six months ago he offered to marry "me' : but I refused his offer. He bought a wedding ring, and be sent me money and paid my rent. ,. Last Thursday fortnight deceased came from Melbourne and came to my house, the rent of which he paid, and stayed there? until. Thursday flast.r ;} Deceased . threatened 1 to take ihy life on Thursday lasi, and I left the house, and have not seen deceased since Thursday last. I never saw deceased intoxicated. Deceased told me he was mad jealous, and I; expect that wag the. reason be threatened me. I was cohabiting with deceased, io Auckland, and be had been keeping me for a period of seven years. When he was away from me he sent me. money for my support. The deceased turned me out of the house, and locked "the door. I did not go of roy own free; will. After-this.l next heard of him yesterday from the Water . Police. I went to the deadhouse, and identified his body. I had returned to my house on Monday at; about; nine o'clock, expecting to finS deceased, but he was not there. No one was living with me besides the deceased.— To the Foreman : There was no person on speaking terms witfTthe deceased in the habit of calling upon me. — Francis Brogan deposed to having known deceased for ; about three weeks. Deceased staid at the house of the last witness. On Sunday last deceased called at witness's bouse. The first time he called he was not ful'y dressed, having nothing on but his shirt trousers, and shoes, and he appeared to witnees to be in the hotrors from drink. Deceased talked incoherently and WBs shaking all over, and beat his breast with his hand. There was no mention made by him of his . having had a quarrel with the last witnees or any other person. Ia about half an hour he returned to his own house. About half an hour afterwards a man took four table knives to witness's house, which he said he had taken out of the way of deceased, as he had seen bim sharpening one of them. Witness was unable to say whether the house occupied by Ann Carroll was a house of ill fame or not. He had not seeu people going to ber house, nor seen her the worse for drink. About half-past three o'clock on Sunday afternoon witness saw deceased sitting down outside cleaning his boot. He then called to witness, and said that he wished it was dark, that he might take a walk.- Tbe last time witness saw deceased was about twenty- five minutes past six, and he was then leaving his house. Witness had identified tbe body of the deceased. The jury re- ' turned a verdict of " Found Drowned," without any marks of violence upon his body further lhau a few fish-bites, but how he became drowned there was no evidence shown to the )vxy.— Herald.
