Wellington, July 20. Captain Cleland, an old settler, was killed on Saturday by his horse shying at the coach and throwing him, and being checked by tbe reins, one of its hind feet struck the deceased on tbe jaw, and the other on the chest. Death was instantaneous. It is proposed to form a Co-operative butchering establishment, consequent upon the rise in meat at Wanganui. Tbe Magistrate has decided that a billiard room connected witb an hotel may be kept open all night. Westport, July 20. On Saturday evening Mrs Carruthers, wife of the town clerk, committed suicide by plunging into the Buller River off the Nelson-3trcet groin. She had been drinking for some days. The body is not yet found. New Plymouth, July 18. The wreck of the Eliza Mary was sold by anction to Mr Baker, for £850. The coals fetchod £150. She was insured io tbe Victoria Company for £2500. Tho Paterson is still in the same position. A nautical survey is being held to-day. Auckland, July 20. Mr J. S. Macfarlane has entered an action, damages £1000, against Mr Harris, junjor, for alleged malicious prosecution, to be heard to-morrow. Port Chalmers, July 18. Arrived: Ship Sussear, 75 days from Gravesend, with 495 souls, ail well. Tbis week we have received over 1500 immigrants by the four ships Caroline, Hindostan, Cartburne, and Sussex. The Sussex spoke the Hereford, from London for-Canterbury, on the lßt of May in about latitude 10 deg North, and left her behind. Dunedin, July 20.
