Auckland, July 11. Gbarles Dyer has been brought down from Pokiri charged with the murder of Eliza Battersea, a woman hs was living with. He was jealous of her, and constantly quarrelling with her, audit is alleged that last Wednesday lie "beat her in a brutal manner, and then poured kerosene on her clothes and set fire to them. He. then wrapped a sack roand her and carried her to the river and threw her in. A man named Watson/seeing her there, lifted her out with Dyer's assistance. All the hair waav burned off her bead, and her clothes were burnt to the waist, and tbe whole of the opper part of her body was half roasted. She lingered for two days in great^ agony and then died. Dyer allege! that she spilt the kerosene over herself, which accidentally ignited. Mr Blackall, chief officer of the barque Pet, has died from fracture of the skull, caused by an accident on board. July 13. i Alexander M'Donald, for shooting Young's coach horse and stopping her Majesty's mail, under pretence of upholding the rights of the natives, was sentenced this morning to three years penal servitude, bat before being released he must bind himself in sureties, himself iv £500, and two in £50 each, to keep the peace in bis district. The passengers by the Waikato arrived in excellent condition. They will be landed to-day, and placed in the Immigration barracks.
