The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1874.

The Goubl-Y Family will appear at the Masonic Hall this, evening. Their entertainment, the particulars of which will be found in the advertisement, has been received with much favor in Australia. We understand ihat a telegram has been received from Mr Luckie stating that he wiil arrive here in the Ladybird to-night, and wiil remain until tbe sailing of the Claud Hamilton on Monday or Tueß«lay next, so that ha will have ample opportunity of meeting bis constituents. Nelson Loan Bill. — Our telegrams inform us that the Government objected yesterday to tbe introduction of any Provincial Loan Bills until the delivery of the Financial Statement, which is likely to take place in ten days' time. In that statement it may be expected that tbe whole question of provincial borrowing will be dealt witb, so that it will possess more than ordinary interest for the people of this province. Sulliyan. — In another column will be found a copy of a despatch addressed by the Governor to the Secretary of State on the subject of Sullivan's release. The people of Nelsou, who have not yet forgotten the evidence adduced at the trial of the Burgess-Kelly-Sullivan gang of murderers, will Bcarcely subacribo to the opinion that the recently pardoned convict was " an unintentional accomplice " in the murder of poor old James Battle, nor will they share in the doubts that are expressed as to bis buying been tbe *• worst of the gang.*' However, it is satisfactory to know that he has. usually gone to Kuglan.i, nod «jo trust that tho old tountry may prove sufficiently attractive to Mr "Clark" to prevent his attempting another journey over the Maungatapu. Nelson Exhibition.— The medals and certificates in coonection with the late Exhibition are now read*, ftld are lying at the office of Mr Broad, the

Vice-President, awaiting' distribution. The medals are some of silver, and some of bronze. On the obverse are tho words "Nelson, New Zealand, Exhibition, 1873," and on tbe reverse is the motto " Honos alit artes " wreathed with ferns and surmounted by a crown. Round the rim ia the namo of the winner and description of the exhibit for which tbe medal was given. The certificates which were deeigned and executed by Mr Harri9, the whole of them being dono by hand work, ore very neatly aod creditably executed. In tbe centre are the words in illuminated letters " Nelson Horticultural end Industrial Exhibition, 1873. This is to certify that the judges award to — — honorable mention for excellence in " Signed by O. Curtis President ; Lowther Broad, Vice-Preeident; and W. Rout, Hon. Sec. At the foot of the inscription is a view of the Provincial Government Buildings, aod beneath that a wreath of j flowers, while oo eiiher side are painted I a fern tree and nikau tree. Both medals and certificates form very neat and appropriate mementos of the first Nelson Exhibition. FooTBALL.--An interesting match will be played on Saturday, when the country players, advised and assisted by the lawyers, will play the rest of the club. The number is limited to fifteen on each side, and a really good game is anticipated. Play will commence at 2*30 p.m. Certain timber native to the province of Otago is highly adapted for musical instruments. A violin was constructed by tbe son of an old settler in the West Taieri, of birch on the back, white pine in front, and tbe handle of goari, and for sweetness and loudness of tone, it is superior to anything we {Times) have heard. A professional states that be never handled a violin with more satisfaction. Tbo Provincial Secretary of Otago announces in the Gazette that the Government, being desirous of encouraging tbe establishment of pottery works in Otago, is prepared to pay a bonus of £2.0 on the following conditions: — On the erection of buildings and plant to tho value of at least £300— £75; on tho production of pottery to a value of not less i han £150 — £75; on the production of a further quantity of pottery to a value of not less than £200— £100. The potteryware io be suitable io each case for household or domestic purposes, to be produced in works permanently established in tbe Province, and to be manufactured either wholly or to a large extent from material obtained ia the Province. The Otago Daily Times has tlio following : — " All sporting men will remember tbat Mr Redwood sent his splendid horsa Manuka to Melbourne about five or six years ago, having entered him for the Melbourne Cup. The horse met with an accident, and did not start, and since that time has been at the stud in Victoria. Sioce then we have heard little or nothing of his stock; but from the entries made with the Victoria Racing Club there is every probability that we shall soon bave plenty of opportunity of judging of Manuka's qualities as a sire. By the Australasian of the 20th of June we notice that amongst the entries for the St. Leger stakes for three-year old colts and fillies, there is the name of Mr Hurtle Fisher's b f Troy, by Manuka, out of Fair Ellen, I In the Mares' Produce Stakes, to be run in October, 1877, for three-year j olds, the produce of mares entered io I 1873, there are no less than eighteen j entries of colts aed fillies who claim Manuka as their sire.
