A curious case was heard recently at Derby, before Mr Baron Pollock, when Lawrence Deasy, Patrick Scbofleld, George Booth, and James Reardon, four lads whose ages varied respectively from ten to thirteen, pleaded guilty to a burglary in the shop of one William Kelsall, and, stealing therefrom two whips aod a spirit lamp, }°* a,Bott burglary in another shop, from which they stole six. pounds of lemon peel. Struck by the youthfuU ness of the offenders, Mr Baron Pollock asked if anything was known of thero, and was assured in reply by Mr Bilton the head constable of Glossop, that they belonged to a thieves' club, by the rules of which they were to steal something every week, or to be fined obe penny, to be spent in sweets, for the benefit of the club. Upon the strength of this statement, his lordship sentenced •? these wild boys of Glossop" to fourteen days' hard labor, and five years in a reformatory, while the wild boys themfelvcs, apparently appalled at the prospect of five years and a fortnight of skilly and enforced industry, broke into «• a lamentable and melancholy howl," and were removed amidst loud protestations of tbeir innocence of the very offence to which they had just pleaded guilty.
