CITY COUNCIL.

Friday, June 26. All the members were present. His Worship the Mayor in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were rend and confirmed.

A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary stating that the Gas and Water wosks will be handod over to the Council so soon as the terms of the proposed transfer have been agreed upon between the Government and the Council. The Provincial Treasurer will be prepared to arrange terms. with any person appointed by the Council. A letter wus read from Mr Edmonds respecting the laying down of csphalte.

A letter was read from Mr Gilbert Pickett applying for the office of Town Clerk. The Town Cletk wns ordered to reply in similar terms to the other applications.

The matter referred to at the last meeting regarding Dr. Williams' and Mr Strong's letter was postponed for another fortnight. Cr. Fell proposed, and Cr. Hooper seconded, " That a vote of thanks be given to his Worship the Mayor for tbe liberal hospitality shown by him to his Excellency the Governor during his visit to Nelson." Carried unanimously. A petition signed by a number of ratepayers and others in and near Col-liugwood-street, was read, stating that a person named John M'Caw keeps his own house as a brothel, and lets other tenements as such, theconsequence being that four contiguous houses are to let, and cannot be let owing to the disreputable character of (he neighborhood. The matter was allowed to stand over until the bye-laws are passed. The Surveyor was instructed to fix a post at the corner of the footpash of Harper-street and Nile-street East.

Cr. Fell asked to amend his motion on Bye-lawp, which was granted, when he proposed the following — Bye- law of the Council of the City of Nelson, made under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1867, and the Acts amending the same, in pursuance of Section 181 of Municipal Corporations Act, 1867, and the Acts amending the same, the Council of the City of Nelson, ordains as follows (that is to say): — 1. The Council of the City of Nelson hereby adopts for the city all the sub-divisious contained in the 13ih Schedule to the Municipal Corporations Act, 1867. 2. AU Bye-laws and regulations or parts of Bye-laws or regulations heretofore in and for the said City of Nelson which are inconsistent with or repugnant to the provisions of the said 13th Schedule, are hereby repealed. Passed by the said Council this 26th duy of June, 1874. The seal of the Corporation has been nffixed hereto this 27th day of June 1874, pursuant to the special order of Council.

The Town Clerk was instructed to send a copy of the above to the Superintendent.

Cr. Burss proposed, and. Cr. Burn seconded, "That Crs. Fell, Percy, .and the Mayor form a Committee for the purpose of drawing up Bye-laws." The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Oakey, informing him that unless the building now in course of erection by him in Bridge-street, next to Mr Augarde's shop, be ;put back to a line (o be pointed out by the City Surveyor, the matter will be placed in the hands of the Solicitor to the Council. Cheques wore signed to the amount of £93 lis 66. . The Council adjourned until Friday, 10th July.
