Westport, June 19. Mr O'Conor held a public meeting last evening, re the tenure of the Westport colliery reserve. He favors the control being given to the Superintendent and Provincial Council, and is adverse to any control by the Borough Council. The Westport public are much dissatisfied. Sailed — Star of the South for Napier and Southern Provinces. This is the "*s. inauguration of the new arrangement for the Fiji service. '*£}& Kenilworth has arrived from the South Sea Islands, bringing* Samoan passengers, who report that the first intelligence of the gold discovery at Samoa was conveyed to the presidents there by the New Zealand papers two months ago. They did not even know ftmt Consul Williams took specimens from the islands. There is no truth whatever in the alleged discovery. Gbeymouth,- June 19. In the District Court yesterday, * -j.udg_aei_t was given in the action City Cft-Ccil versus Hughes and M'Cartby, lessees,. of the Brunner Coal Mining Company, to recover payment of £116 odd, being the promised contribution towards the fee of Mr Moriarty for., reporting upon the harbor works. Judge Harvey nonsuited tho plaintiffs with costs, on the grounds that the action was premature. On the point of its being ultra vires likewise being raised, the Judge gave his opinion that the Municipal Council had no right to enter into an engagement for services in connection with harbor works. • The Greymouth Coal Mining Company have bottomed the main shaft, and proved the seam to be fourteen fett thick, the coal being ef excellent quality. A seam of first-class fire clay underlies the clay, but its thickness is aot yet proved.
