EDUCATION COMMITTEES.
Stoke.-— The election of three members to fill the vacancies in the Local Committee of Education for this district, took' place at the School-houee yesterday, when fifteen residents were present. Mr A. W. Barnett was called to the chair* The retiring members were Messrs W. Rout, G. F. Martin, and J. Paynter. Mr H. Parker proposed and Mr W. D. Cresswell seconded, t>; F. Martin; Mr W. Burlace proposed and Mr H. Parker seconded, James Ching ; Mr W. Burlace proposed and Mr G. Bovey seconded, W. D. Cresswell; Mr B. Condell proposed and Mr W. Parker seconded, H. Parker; Mr Cockram proposed and Mr T. Tidd seconded, J. Rowbotham; Mr G. F. Martin proposed and Mr B. Condell seconded, H. Hyde. A ballot was then taken, with the following result:— -G. F. Martin 14, J. Chiog 9, W. D. Cresswell 7. H. Paiker 6, H. Hyde 5, J. Rowbotham 3. The new Committee then held a meeting, and appointed Mr G. F. Martin the representative at the Central Board. Richmond. — A meeting of householders was held in the Agricultural Hall, Mr W. Harkness in the chair, to fill the vacancies in the Local Com»mittee of Education caused by the retiring of Messrs "W. Harkness, T. R. Hodder, J. Croucher, C. Say well, and Rev. W. Caonell. The following were proposed : — Messrs W. Harkness, T. R. Hodder, J. Croucher, J. H. Harkness, C. Saywell, T. J. Thompson, and W. Tovey. The following was the result of the ballot :-— W. Harkness 17, T. R. Hodder 16, J. Croucher 13, J. H. Harkness 13, C. Saywell 12, T. J. Thompson 10, W. Tovey 10. The firstfive wore consequently duly elected. Hope. — At a meeting of the householders of the Hope and Ranzau district, held yesterday at the Ranzau School, the following householders were elected members of the Hope Education Committee : — Messrs C. P. Keams, H. Lankow, F. Tie. j en, J. M. Packer, and John Lamp, the latter for one yoar only. The Committee" afterwards met and appointed Mr W. Jessop as their representative at tbe Central Board, and reelected Mr C. P. Reams as Secretary. Spring Grove.— The election of the Local Committee of Education took place yesterday, about twenty-seven householders being present. The retiring members were Messsrs J. Robertson, J. Masters, and W. Hodgson. Mr Edmunds was voted to the chair, and called upon those present to nominate eome persons to fill up the vacancies. Mr John Masters proposed, and Mr Edward Newth seconded, Mr Jabez Hill. Mr George Rutherford, jun., proposed, and Mr C. Masters seconded, Mr James Robertson. Mr James Woolley proposed, and Mr Edward Lewis seconded, Mr William Hodgson. Mr W. Ratt then proposed, and Mr W. Botterell seconded, Mr P. C. Gowland. Mr J. Robertson said he should object to Mr Gowland, as he was outside the educational district. A letter, enclosing a plan of the district, was then put in and read from tho Chairman of the Central Board, which showed that Mr Gowland was out of Spring Grove District, and was therefore not eligible for election. Mr Lewis wished to say a few words to thank Mr J. Masters, who was one of the retiring members and had been representative at the Central Board, but was about to leave the province. On behalf of the Committee he returned him his most sincere thanks for the kind interest he had always taken in these matters, and said that he had been put to considerable expense besides. Mr Masters thanked Mr Lewis for the kind way in which he had spoken, and although leaving the province, he and a few of his friends in the province to which he was going would try and have the Bible read in the schools there, although nothing of the kind had been done there yet. He said he had always done so at Spring Grove aud succeeded, and should do so whereever he went. The Chairman then said he must congratulate the meeting on the absence of the bad feeling which characterised the meeting of last year, and as there were no other candidates proposed he would declare Messrs Robertson, Hodgson, and Hill duly elected. At a Committee meeting held afterwards the Bishop of Nelson was appointed the Representative at the Central Board. Lower Wakefield. — The attendance was small, Mr Chattock in the chair. The retiring members were Messrs R. M. Smith, Robeon, and Baigent. Messrs R. M. Smith, J. Price, and J. Thomas were elected. The Committee afterwards held a meeting, when Mr W. Bird was appointed Secretary, and Mr R. M. Smith representative at the Central Board.
