The Melbourne Argus of May 11 says:-—We understand that a rather arousing correspondence has for some time been going on between the representalives of tbe Governor of New Zealand and the Governments of tbe other Australian colonies. Sir James Fergusson has started tbe idea that all correspondence between the Governments of the several colonies should come direct from and to the Governors of tbe colonies, and not through their responsible advisers. Mr Francis does not agree with this view, and believing it to be contrary both to the theory and practice of responsible government, hns declined to accede tothe proposition. We believe the. Colonial Secretary of New South Wales has taken similar action. Some impudent thief lately effected a daring robbery at the Melbourne Detective Office. The Argus says: — During the morning a charwoman was cleaning out the muster-room, when a man in his shirt sleeves walked into the room, and going to where some coats were banging up, coolly appropriated one belonging to a detective, and walked out again, the woman supposing that he was ono of the ornaments of the force. The owner of the coat, on finding what had happened, was the more chagrined that his memo book V7as in the pocket of the coat.
