Auckland, June 2. A fire at Newmarket destroyed four buildings. M'Neill's, baker, owned by Wrigley, insured in the South British for £250, and in the Norwich Union for £50 j Wetherford's, ironmonger, stock insured for £200 in the New Zealand, and the building for £200 in the South British, and £150 in the New Zealand; Jennings' draper, stock insured for £250 in the New Zealand; and Morgan's, building insured for £200 in tbe New Zealand, and stock for £260 in the Norwich Union. A quantity of goods were saved, but it is estimated that the insurance will not nearly cover the loss. The fire is believed to have originated in Wetherford's workshop. Mr Maclarlaue id a candidate for Waitemata. Mr Vonderhyde, of the firm of Henderson and Macfarlane, is a candidate to represent Waitemata.

The Government propose to withdraw the rating clauses in the Education Bill and to substitute a uniform household tax of jgl, a bachelor tax of 10s, and a capitation tax or 10s per child attending the schools up to four in one family. Wellington, June 3. In tho General Synod a Bill has been introduced to regulate the affairs of St John's College, Auckland. A Bill for amending the constitution of the Church in New Zealand, and making certain necessary alterations in its organisation was read the second time. It was resolved to appoint a select committee to inquire into the desirableness or otherwise of adopting the new lectionary. The General Synod has passed a resolution to the effect that Dr Jenner had no right to be considered the first Bishop of the See of Dunedin, and that they recognise the Right Rev Samuel Neville as the present and first Bishop of the See of Dunedin. Gbahamstown, June 2. A fearful north-west gale last night occasioned extensive damage. Three coasting vessels made breaches through the wharf known as Curtis'. The sea wall from Grahamstown to Tararu is considerably damaged, and on the railway a quantity of ballast was washed away. Tho Tararu wharf in nearly destroyed, and the bench is strewed with timber. One cutter now lies high and dry in the main street of Grahamstowu. It is scarcely possible at present to estimate the extent of the damage. Alexandra, June 3. Mr Pender, Inspector of Police at Christchurch for the past twelve years, having been removed to Timaru, a testimonial consisting of a gold watch and chain, a silver tea and coffee service, and 250 sovereigns, and an illuminated address was publicly presented to him. A large number of leading citizens were present. In the Provincial Conncil a motion was put that tbe Museum be opened for at least three hours every Sunday afternoon, and was carried by 26 votes against 7. Lyttelton, June 3. About 3000 tons of stone are estiroamated to have been removed by tbe last blast, which was only a partial one, as one chamber containing over two tons did not fire.
