The barque Earl of South Eak, from NewCastle with coal, owned by Linderson and Marshall of Melbourne, when endeavoring to I enter the Heads this afternoon with a light wind and heavy swell, struck heavily on Barrets reef. The forecastle filled with a breaking set, and the foremast went overboard and the mainmast in n similar manner. Iu the General Synod, besides routine business, the following was transacted: — A Committee was appointed to take into consideration the whole Question of the constitution and government of St John's College, Auckland, consisting of the Bishops of Nelson, Auckland, and Dunedin, Archdeacons Maunsell and Williams, 'the Rev. S. Poole, and M? Sewell. A bill to make certain alterations in Statute No, 7, was read the second time. On the motion of the Bishop ot Auckland, it was resolyed that tbe district between Patea River; and the Hangatihua River te considered ajpart of the Diocese of Wellington. A bill for establishing a Board of theological studies was read the first time. ; The Bishop of Auckland moved that a Committee be appointed to consider the way in which General Synod properties are administered, and report thereon. Agreed to. On the motion ot the Dean of Chris tehurch a Bill for establishing Diocesan Courts and Courts of Appeal was read the first time, and also a Bill to define Ecclesiastical offences and punishments thereof. It was resolved on the motion of Archdeacon Stock, that a general Pension Board be formed to hold office till next session, to collect data in reference to each Diocese, both as to the help it may need and what it can c ntiibute to tbe general pension scheme; to draw up a scheme on data collected and Bubmit the same to the several Diocesan Synods for approval, and if they are unanimous to bring the scheme into operation under the authority of the General Synod. ~ Wanganui, May 29. There are nine entries for the Grand Colonial Steeplechase, and six for the Maiden •Plate. The meeting is expected to be a great success. Butcher Boy, the Nelson horse, iB the favorite for the big event. PortChalmers, May 29. The ships Buckingham and Jane Court are at the Heads with about 850 immigrants) all well. Napier May 29. Four of the crewof the Suhiehallion are in custody for mutinous conduct in port. They locked the captain and mate in the cabin and Helped themselves to grog liberally on the voyage out, and some of the immigrants broached the cargo.
