Wellington, May 21. Private advices from New Caledonia re the escaped Communists state tbat Rochfort was on the Pies-quit Duco, and tbat Jouard was employed in a butchery as cashier, his accounts being correct to a centime before he -left.- Grousset was employed at- Sohn's circular saw establishment aB architect, and was preparing a plan of a new theatre in Sydney for exhibition. He left a letter for hiß employer, thanking him for his kindness, and stating that he had taken his plan ot the theatre, and would bee that it was in the exhibition at Jlnow. A convict was guillotined for striking an officer, and another was condemned for the same offence. At Oubatcbee, a man named Bafeman, late of Hew Zealand, shot the commandant for trying to elope with a girl, at one time a barmaid at the Greyhound Hotel, Auckland, who lived with Bateman as his wife. It was expected that Bateman would get off with three months' imprisonment. The commandant lived two hours after being shot. Letters have been found from him enclosiug poison to the girl to give to Batemaa. H M.S. Pearl arrived ac Noumea on the 23rd April, aud was to leave on the 27th. Chkibtcho-CH, May 20. The proprietors of the Press announce their intention of publishing a new evening paper to be called the Globe on the Ist of next month.

The Provincial Council has passed as an education rate a household tax as follows : — Over £10 and under £20 rental, v Oa; over £.0 and un.er £50 rental, 40; over £50 and under £100 rental, 60s; over £100 rental, 80s. All bachelors are to be taxed 20s annually. B_-__", May 21. The Otago, Captain M'Lean, left Melbourne on the 14th, and arrived at 10 p.m. yesterday, and came to the wharf this moroiug at 7*30. She brings 430 tons of cargo, 26 horses, and 94 passengers for all ports, -he sails at 8 p.m. for Dunedin.
