The Grip Road. — We.haye received the following telegram from a corres-

pondent at the Lyell :-r-The people here are indignant at the proposed expendidure of £1100 to make the road down the river bed between the Grip aod the Hope, and that ±250 only are placed on the Estimates forMatakitaki. A public meeting is to be held. Fxecutive Ordinance — Mr Acton Adams has given notice that he wil! to-morrow evening move for leave to introduce a Bill to repeal "The Executive Government Act, 1871," and to make other provisions in lieu thereof. On the second reading of this Bill will most likely take place the fight for which so many appear to be eager, and the division will settle this vexed question for another year at least. Cruelty to Animals. — The following is one of the principal clauses of the " Cruelty to Animals Act^" which has recently passed tbe second reading in the Provincial Council : — " If any person shall, from and after the passing of this Act, cruelly beat, ill-treat, overdrive, abuse, or torture, or cause or procure to be cruelly beaten, ill-treated, over-driven, over-riden, abused, or tortured, any animal, every such offender shall for every such offence forfeit and pay a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds with costs, or be imprisoned for any term not exceeding six calendar months wiih hard labor."
