The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The Public Works Committee reported, througbhCr Burn, having been through the new sewer and found that the work had been satisfactorily done, and that they had signed a cheque for the balance of the contract, without any extras, accordingly. The report waa adopted. _-.-... The .Surveyor , produced plans and specification for the extension of the sower in Hardy-street and Nile-street West, which were* adopted, and tenders were ordered to be advertised for, to be sent in by the next meeting of the Council. Tbe adoption of a Corporation Seal was postponed until next meeting. A letter from the clerk to the Superintendent was read, stating that £118 0_ 31, amount accruing from tbe sale of dog tickets, had been placed to the credit of the Council at the Bank of New Zealand. A letter from the Earth-Closet Factory of Melbourno (Messrs Draper and Sons) asking to be informed if the Town Council of Nelson and the inhabitants approved of tbe introduction of Earth closets in the town, and also, if they undertook to introduce them, whether the Council would support them by making tbe earth closets universal. The Surveyor was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the letter. . A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office acknowledging the receipt of letter of the 4th May, notifying tbe election of Mr Joseph Reid Dodson as Mayor of the Borough of Nelson. A letter was read from the Secretary of tho Fire Brigade, pointing out the necessity of the City Council appointing a Fire Inspector or Inspector for the city. The names of two or three gentleman were mentioned by the Mayor, with whom the oppointmant solely rests, which will appear in the Provincial Gazette io due course. A letter was read from Mr Alfred Hibble applying for the appointment of Town Clerk ; also, a letter from Mr John Wm. Tattoo applying for the ofiice of Manager of the Gas and Water Works. The Surveyor was instructed to inform both gentlemen that the np- ! plications could not be entertained by tbe Council at present The Surveyor was instructed to have tbe paving of the water table near the Trafalgar Hotel lowered; and also to advertise a caution to cartmen and others against removing gravel, sand, &c , from the river Maitai or from tbe Brook-street stream without the Surveyor's permission. The following resolution in connection with the Harbor Board Bill was agreed to : — " That in the opinion of the City Council the establishment of a Harbor Board would be detrimental to tbe interests of the city, as creating unnecessary machinery in the management of the town reserves." Cr Percy gave notice of motion that at the next meeting the consideration of bye-laws in Schedule 13, of the Municipal Corporations Act be considered hy the Conncih :: The question of appointing a solicitor [ for the Council was deferred for the present. The usual cheques were signed, and the Council adjourned until Friday evening, the 29th inst.
