S. Macfarlane was continued yesterday. Mr
Rees at the opening asked Mr Buckland, M.H.R , whether it was true that Macfar.an.fi had been a partner witli him in certain land transactions during the p .st fortnight. .Mr Buckland declined to gratify his curiosity. Mr ßees. also objected to l.oth the Justice, on the ground that 'their -xjinimissions of the peace had lap e.i though no.-attendance at two petty sessions during.. the year. It was ruled that the Justices should sit. Mr" Keddell, R.M , deposed that Macfarlane sent him a letter while the hearing of the charge against Craig for presenting a revolver at Harris was pending, telling him to be cautious how he adjudicated on Craig. Mr Het.ke.ii spoke for two hours for the defence, imputing vindictiveness and malice against Craig and contending that the statements of the witnesses for the prosecution were improbable and unreliable. At two o'clock the Court adjourned, and Mr Macfarlane und Mr liucklund dined togt tber at Cummiug's. Oa reasacmbliig the case was dismissed. Two other charges against Macfarlane. will be heard on Monday. May 16. Mr Buckland contradicts the statement thut h. dined with Macfarlane during the adjournment of the Court. He says he was passing through the room alter dining when a person sitting at. the same ti-ble as Macfarlane teekoned to him, when he went and sat down at the table for a few minutes, and then went out alone. The motion for attachment of the Guardian Company and others in consequence of an article in the Guardian newspaper commenting on the Judge's order has fallen through. Christchurch, May 15. At a meeting ofthe Spinning and Weaving Company yesterday, it was announced that an exi enßive plant for the manufacture of woollen good**, ordered from England, will leave London this month. Wheat is not quite so firm, owing to the flacLened demand in the Australian Colonies. Prices in Christchurch are somewhat easier, being 4s 6d to 4s 8d for farmers' second-hand. Transactions are at an advance for immediate shipments. . Eor flour, prices are the Bame as last week, viz., £_2 for sacks, £12 10s for 10'Jlb bags, and £13 for 50lb bags, with 10s per ton extra, fob. in Lyttelton. Bran, £6 5s per ton; sharps, scarce, at £7; oatmeal, £_6J Oats are still i.i demand in New Zealand, although the Australian demand has slackened. Farmers are getting 4s ; secondhand transactions are at a much higher figure. Seycral good sized lots have changed hands for shipmeut to Australia and Auckland. In barley there is a moderate business ; last week's quotati ns bsing at 6s. The demand is easier, owing to frosts and scarcity of feed. Farmers are getting from lid to Is Ojd for butter, cheese, excellent demand, 7d; potatoes, still, £3; but crops are not timing out equal to expectations, in some instances rot half last year's yield . New hams and bacon are in the market; the. price in Christchurch, in equal proportions, being from 9Jd. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, it was resolved to request the cooperation of the other Chambers in the colony in endeavoring to get a new Insolvency Bill, similar to the one rejected last session of the General Assembly. It was also decided to memorialise the General Government for measures to amend the Licensing Act so as to enable Commissioner.- to grant wholesale lictnt.es any time during the year.
