General Synod. — The session of the General Synod of the Church of England was to commence at Willing-to-day. The members for the Diocese of Nelson are: — Clergy: The Bishop of Nelson, The Yen. Archdeacon Butt, and the Revs R. J. Thorpe, and S. Poole. Laity : Messrs. C. Hunter Brown, Lee, Quick, and Dr Kemp. The Bishop and other members resident in Nelson proceed to Wellington by the Claud Hamilton to-morrow evening. Assaulting a Constable.— Richard Kelly, a seaman of the John Bull, was this morning sentenced to five weeks imprisonment with hard labor for assaulting Constable Dixon in the discharge of his duty. Australian Mails.— The Claud Hamilton, which left Greymouth last night, is expected to arrive here this evening. We are requested to state that the Post Office will be open for a short time for the delivery of her mails. Football Match. — A match will be played on Saturday next between twenty of the Nelson Artillery Company and twenty of the Nelson and College Clubs. The names of the respective players are, Artillery : Adams, Blackburn, Clouston, Cooke, Edwards, Halliday, Harley, Hervey, Jennings, Leaper," Lloyd, Lightband, Roy, Scaife, Seed, Strong, R. C. Tennent, D C. Tennent, Wnrnock, and Watta. Town: W. Barnicoat, J. Barnicoat, Blundell, Burnett, A. Campbell, G. Campbell, Ci oss, Dignan, Gully, Hodgson, Fearon, Keinpthorne, Hole, Jenkins, T.Nicholson, G. Nicholson, Otterson, Speed, J. Well?, and S. Wells. The game will commence at 3 o'clock, and is likely to be a very hardly contested one. The Artillery will play in their forage caps. Government Gazette. — The following notifications relating to Nelson nppear in the General Government Gazette of Thursday last : — Frank Guinness, Eeq., R.M., is appointed a Coroner of the colony, and George Freeman Martin an Honorary Lieutenant in the Stoke Volunteer Cadets. Magistrates' Court. — Askew v. A. II Brind, Secretary Caledonian Society — This was a claim for the value of 18 bottles of Tennent's ale, 12 bottles of Colonial ale, 12 jugs of beer for a "Doch on Darroa" for 17 Committeemen and others, and for 23 glasses broken, as it was alleged,, by the habit Scotchmen have of knocking their glases^/'iogether on festive occasions, the occasion in question having been the Caledonian Society's fete, Ist January, 1871. Mr Acton Adams appeared for the piaintiff, andTMF Maclean for the defendant,' who said that although the Committee did not admit any portion of!. the debt, they had offered the plaintiff £2 10a, believing thnt »he|hadsustained/sQme loss.' :•'...
