The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1874.

The Suez Mail. — The Albion with the Suez Mail arrived at the Bluff at 150 p.m. to-day, but no telegrams had reached us up to the time of our going to press.

Bachelder's Pantascope. — A large audience was attracted again yesterdoy evening by the pictures now on view at the Oddfellows' Hall, and which ere really worth seeing, Mr Sflunders delighted his hearers, with a solo on the harp, played as he only can play, and as a finish to the entertainment the audience were greatly amused with tbe clever performances of the automaton on the slack rope.

Victoria Insurance Compant. — Messrs H. Davis & Co have been appointed agents for (he Victoria Fire and Life Insurance Company for the province of Nelson.

Eesident Magistrate's Court. — On Thursday last Alfred James, of Waimea West was charged by Alfred Helps, bailiff, with using obscne language, and fined 20s and 21s 6d costs. He was further charged with making use of language for the sake of provocation to the bailiff while in the execution of his duty, and ordered to enter into his own recognizance of £20 to keep the peace for three months.

Nelson Volunteer Artillery. — This Company held its annual meeting last night in the Drill Shed. The balance sheet was read, showing satisfactory results, and the new committee, the secretary, and auditors for the ensuing year were elected. The Captain made a short address, congratulating the Company upon the progress made during the past twelve months, and complimenting the handmaster and band upon the efficiency attained, stating that there was no other amateur Band in the colony superior to them.

The Rev. G. H. Johnstonb. — After ten years' labors in the parish of Christ ( hurch. the Rev. G. H. Johnstone will to-morrow evening bid farewell to his parishioners. By his urbanity, kindly, genial manner, and ready sympathy with ai) in distress, the reverend gentleman who is about to leave us has gained the regard and esteem of all with whom he has been brought in contact, and, if we are not very much mistaken, his valedictory address will be listened to by one of the largest congregations that ever assembled within the walls of the church in which he has officiated with so much faithfulness, earnestness, and assiduity for so long a term of years. The Bishop of Nelson will conduct the service in the morning, and the serrron will be preached by the Rey. G, H. Johnstone.

The New Incumbent op Chrx. Chukch.— The induction of the Rev James Leighton will take place in Christ Church, on Monday evening, at seven o'clock, when the order of the service will be of an interesting character, as we believe no formal institution of a clergyman has yet taken place in Nelson, at least for not very many years. The form which will be used is sanctioned by antiquity with the necessary adaptation to a colonial diocese. The nomination of the Re? James Leigh ton, late Rector of Bispham, in Blackpool, will first of all be notified, and he will be presented by the Rev R. J. Thorpe to the Bishop for institution. He will then mske the usual declarations, and, after prayer, will be formally and solemnly instituted by the Bishop. The keys of the church will then be presented to the Incumbent by the senior Churchwarden in this form :— "ln the name and behalf of the Parish of Christ Church I do receive and acknowledge you, the Rev James Leighton, as Incumbent of the same, and in token thereof I give into your hands the keys of this church." To which, answer will be made — "I, James Leighton, receive these keys of the House of God at your hands as the pledgee of my induction thereto, and of your recognition of me in behalf of this parish, as Incumbent of the same, and I promise by the help of God to be for you, and for those in this parish who are or who may be committed to my care, a faithful minister of Christ." An anthem will then be sung and a special address be delivered by the Bishop. Mr Leighton will preach for the first time on Sunday week, May 17th.

Parish of Christ Church. — The adjourned meeting of the parishioners of Christ Church was held last night, the Right Eev. the Bishop of Nelson in the chair. It was resolved that tha rebuilding of the Parsonage, utilising the preseut cob walls and brick chimneys and other material that might prove to be Bound, should be commenced without delay. Also that a subscription list should be openod with the view of raising ihe sum of £400, being the estimated cost of the work. His Lordship the Bishop at once put his name down for £10, Mr C. Hunter Brown for £20, Mr J. R. Doduon for £20, and Mr Fell for £10, and it was stated that the sum of £100 would be available for the purpose from the proceeds of the late bazaars. The parishioners will be canvassed for subscriptions for this, highly .necessary work without delay.
