CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, May 7. \ Present . Messrs Burnicoat (cbair- ■' man), Thorpe, Buddie, Campbell, Garin, Rout, Tarrant, Wastney, Jackson, Talbot, Shephard, Percy, Mercer, Burn, B.oad, _£_lling>Wigzell, Simmons, Masters. The report of the Finance Committee having been read, it "was resolved, after discussion, " That the .**' report be referred to the Committee for re-consideration." Mr Simmons having obtained leave to amend his motion as follows, " That the Inspector be not required, for the future, to visit any school more than twice in the course of a year," hie pioposiiion waa carried after a division. Ayes, 9 — Messrs Shephard, Simmons, Broad, Mercer, Burn, Thorpe, Campbell, Masters, and Buddie. Noes, 4 — • Messrs Wastney, llout, Tarrant, and Talbot. A memorial by 44 teachers of Provincial schools, requesting tbe Board to apply to the Provincial Council lor such an increased grant as would enable the Board to add 10 per cent, to all teachers' salaties, was referred to the Finance Committee. A petition from several householders residing in Lower Wakefield, requesting the Board to alter the boundaries of Spring Grove and Lower Wakefield districts was also referred to the Finance Committee. A letter from the Westport Committee was read, requesting tho Board to build a house for the master. It was resolved, on tbe motion of Mr Burn, "That the Secretary' be, instructed to express the- -.regret of" the Board at iis inability to" incur any further liability, at present, on account of new builings. A letter from the Secretary to the Committee of St. Patrick's school, Charleston, was read, requesting the Board to increase the subsidy so as to admit of the employment of an assistant teacher. The Secretary was instructed to reply that the present financial position of the Board will not admit of any alteration of the scale upon which subsidies are granted. The Secretory was instructed fo reply to an application from Mr T. B. Coombes to be appointed architect to the Board, that it was not the intention of the Board to make any such appointment. The Secretary's annual estimate of the requirements of tbe Central Board wa3 read. The Secretary was instructed to send a copyj of this estimate to the ProvinciaP G*pv,erument, and another lo the Provincial " Council, together with such explanations as he may think necessary. NOTICES OF MOTION. (1.) By Mr B. M. Smith— Tbat the salary of Mrs Chattock, assistant teacher at Lower Wakefield school, be increased from £24 to £36 per annum from June Ist. (2.) By Mr C. Kelling -That £7 be granted to ihe Upper Moutere Committee, to defray the cost of removing and rebuilding the chimney at Neudorf. (3.) By Mr W. Wastney— That from June Ist tho salary of tbe assistant teacher Vt St. Mary's Girls' school be reduced from £48 to £36 per annum.
