APPLAUSE AT CONCERTS.
To the Editor ov the Evening Mail. Sir — I write this letter under the impression that I can explain the apparently contradictory statements of your two correspondents on the subject of applause at concerts of sacred music. I subscribed to the Sacred Hat monic Society in London for several ' ears, and attended nearly all the subscripti.n concerts during those years, and frequently purchased tickets for the ndh-iubscription concerts. At the subscription concerts the audience, composed a roost entirely of regular subscribers, allowed the performance to proceed io the end without any demonstration beyond a subdued expression of approbation; but at the non-subscription concerts the audience, composed of the general public, with probably , a large percentage of country fj)k happening to be in London, and bent on having the most for their money, the applause used sometimes to be most uproarious, and pieces were repeated in order to allow the performance to proceed, but my impression is that as a rule the demands of tho audience for a repeat were not complied with, and the applause generally was a kiad of murmur of satisfaction. I am, &c, An Old Subscriber to itblb S. H. S., London. Nelson, May 7,1874
