The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 1874.

Foreign News. — We publish today telegrams from England nnd Australia which have reached us via Auckland, but we are not'informed by whit steamer they were brought to that port. Licensing Courts.— The Licensing Commissioners will sit in ihe three Waimea districts to-moirow, a-i follows : — Waimea East, at 11 am. ; Waimea South, at 1 p.m. ; Waimea West, . at 2 30 p.m.

Chbist GhuKch - — A special service on the occasion of the return of the Bishop of Nelson from England, was held &t Cbrist Cburch last evening, when there was a very good congregation considering' the short notice that had been given. Of the Clergy, there were present in addition to the Bishop, the Revs G. H. Johnstone, R. J, Thorpe, E. S. Cross, W. Rutlerfurd, W. Grace, and J. Kempthorne. , Claus Rekel Concerts. — ■ The second appearance of tbis talented company, at the Masonic Hall last night was unfortunately not supported as it deserved; this however, may be accounted for by the threateniug. aspect of the weather, and to a great extent also by tbe Special Thanksgiving Service in Christ Church. The thinness of the audience nevertheless seemed not to damp the ardor of (he performers, who went through tbeir excellent programme with the utmost care to the full delight of those who were fortunate enough to be present. Mdlle Claus fully justified the eulogies of our notice of the previous evening's concert in her skillful execution of Alard's transcript on Verdi's Nabucco, as also in her tasteful interpretation of one of Mendelssohn's Lieder ohneworte. "Auld Lang Syne "seemed to afford special delight to tbe more unsophisticated, nnd in the inevitable encore ."Terence's farewell" was played with much pathos. But perhaps themost artistically executed ,-Sol.o was the Fantasia on " Traviata,'' introducing the powerful airs from that favorite opera, with elaborate variations in each. •Mdlle, Rekei's performance of this evening surpassed those of the previous, — the fair vocalist is better enabled to accommodate her voice to the hall,—Mocfarren's delightful ballad, ''The Beating of my own Heart," calls for special commendation for perfect articulation, as well as for feeling. The Swedieh ballad " Spring and Autumn" was also given in excellent style. Mods Rekei's admirable accompaniments must always commend themselves to special notice, and his execution of his own " Tarantella " pronounces bim to be an able pianist. Signor Ceccbi's fine voice (which also seemed to mete its power better to suit the room) sang, among other well-selected songs Motei's Romanza "Non c Ver/' with much delivery and finish. Lastly, though not least, we notice tbe excellent duet on the Mason and Humlin organ, by our musical townsman Mr Corrick, and pianoforte by Mons. Rekel. The duet was " Marcbe aux Flambeaux " by Scots on Clark, specially written for these instruments, the tones of which blend together most harmoniously. The March was played with great precision and the effect was highly pleasing. Mr Corrick has kindly consented to assist the company on a future occasion, and there is. now no want of pieces arranged for Cabinet organ and piano. Tfe-e company appear again this evening and we trust that by a good attendance

talent will be duly encouraged so that in this co.npaiaiively remote part of the wot 11 wo may occasionally be favored with visits from artists such as these.
