GREAT FIRE AT AUCKLAND. ArcKLAND, April 18. Mr Alexander launders reports sales of National Bnnk at 755; South British, 50s; Moinatairi, 375; Alburnia, new, 355; Tokatea, 10s 6d. Buyers : Cabdouian, j£9 2s 6J; Standard, 15s 6d. 7*45 p.m. A great fire is raping ia Queen-street. Klng'B chemist, Marsh-ill's fruiterer, Kedfern's photographer, Hurst's produce merchant, Cheat's, hair-dresser, and SfymourV frui'erer, are already burnt down. The Southern Cross and Evening Star offices, and V&ilc's buildings are in great danger. April 19. The fire was confined to the block of wooden buildings between Vaile's drapery establishment, and tho Southern Cross office, both buildings being of brick. It originated in King, the chemist, tan ing down a bottle of tw. pentine which broke against another vial containing chemicals, aud ignited. The building was a mass of dames in a few minutes. Hughes' oyster shop, and the shop of Townsend, produce merchant, were burnt down, beelde* those mentioned laet night. The Sout 1 crn Cross engine room was sevtral tiroes on fire, bnt great exertions paved it, though the wall waß damaged by the heat. The water supply was most ineffic:enr. The insurances, so far ob ascertained, are Norwich Union, £l2oo; New Zealand, .£1500; Victoria, £1600; Royal, £100; South British, nothing. April 20. The burned buildings were aU owned by Mr Goodfellow, and were insured in the Norwich Union for £700 ; and Scottish Commercial ior £500. Hurst's stock was insured in the Victorian for £700, and Marshall's for £100; King's, in the New Zealand for £700; Townsend's, New Zealand, £500 ; Se mour'd, New Zealand, £200 ; Redfern's, New Zealand, £100. The damage in the building of the Sou her.i Cross office fall chiefly on the Norwich Union. There ha^e been no more fresh cases of illness among the Dorette'a passengers, and she will be admitted to pratique in a day or two. The brig Albion, loading sleepers in the Kainkspakipiki rivt-r, while coming out got ashore on the rocks, nnd broke her back. She lies with four ieet of water in her hold, f-he is owned by Messrs Henderson and Maifarlane, and reported to be insured ior £2000. New Plymouth, April 20. Tbe Government have purchased another block of hnd from the natives. Major Gordon is here, and in making tha annual inspection of the volunteers he passed severe strictures on the No 1 Royals, one of the oldest Companies in the district, in consequence of which the company is going to disband. Wellington, April 18. Mr Bancke, whose claims have betn before the Parliament frequently, entered an action in the Supreme Court against Mr Vogol as head of the Government. Plaintiff, who conducted his own case, has just been defeated upon ail points. Passages c«n now be booked here for New Plymouth on the West Coast, and Tauranga on the East Coast, as well as to Taupo and the Hot Lakes. A. Young has obtained the contract to WaipuSsurau and Napier April 20. The Luna arrived labt evening irom her Northern trip. About 600 people went to the Hutt by the railway yesterday. Cattle trucks had to be filled with seats. The eteamer Stormbird is about to be laid on for the Taranaki trade by Messrs Turnbull.
