WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

Tuesday, April 7. The monthly meeting was held at the Bridge Hotel. Present—- Messrs Rout (chairman), Barnicoat, Thomson, Win, and Tunnicliff. The minutes of last meeting were rend ntlrl nnnflrmoJ nhn. 1 -_L .I.

. <_«v. au.. v-wiiui uicu, a,uer wnicn MP following report from the Overseer was read:— "According to your instructions I have put in 33 yards of culvert at tbe chasm by Bigpar's, aud nearly filled in to tho level of the road, having had permission to take off the brow of the baok on the adjoining land. The cost of the above, as per bill attached, amounts to £21 10a 9d. If it is your intention to carry on tbe culvert at the length suggested by the Surveyor, some provision must be made for the filling, as there is very little stuff in the vicinity to come off the road sides. Mr Biggar wishes to bring before your notice the extra fencing he will have to erect on account of the above work. " With regard to the gravel tendered gratuitously to the Board by Mr Freeman Martin, and of which I was ordered to get 50 yards to test both material aod cost, I have to inform you that I got out three loads, and found it very inferior, being the same as that out of Mr Marsden's creek. There is good gravel on Mr Martin's land, but that was for sale. I declined taking any more, but got some up from the Port to the top of Burlace's hill, to be in readiness to repair the same: the stuff out of the ditch and sides here I am putting in the hollow at the foot of the hill, and am going to cover the same with gravel to improve the gradient. "The parapets of the culvert at Forty-line having given way by the pressure of the filling, I have had them rebuilt, and an apron pitched at each end; cost, £20 14*. " Mr W. Boddington, having found the large screen, claims the amount, £4, which was retained till he should deliver up the same. It is in good order. "In Bridge Valley two new bridges have been put up, and I have examined tho road from Reader's corner to the west end of Eves' boundary, a distance of 16 chains; it is no doubt very bad in the winter. Messrs Evea and Verry propose widening the side cutting from 9ft to 15ft, and clearing the lower side of manuka, &c., for the Bum of £8; the Board to pay one-half. " The men sent to repair Spooner's range and Ray's saddle having finished, I have kept them on clearing roadsides from briars and gorse, and opening water-courses, through Foxhill. I Bhould suggest that they be retained for another month, as the road is very narrow in places. A two-feet culvert, the full width of the road, is required to replace the rotten bridge near Mr Hoult's mill.

"In Eighty-eight Valley that portion whioh has been reformed by Wads worth will want gravelling at once ; there will be about 12 chains. That by Mr. ' Welte' is coming up so thick with gorse, that it had better be moved, in order to kill it now it is young. "In Hoult's Valley, the surveyor and myself, after looking at the road, let about 29, chains of forming and side-cutting at £l per chain, and a bridge for £10 to Mr. Gaiffith, jun., the Board being liable for only half the amount. ' Mrl Charles Stagg has finished his contract, No. 6, forming on Stanley Brook road. In Waimea West, Mr. L. Dron has done his contract of gravelling. £11 Is. 10d. Patching has been done; in Eve's YaUey to the amount of £14 13a. I have been obliged: to pitch the south side of the bank by Mr. W. Dron's, as it was beginning to tear. The Aldourie road requires about 15 chains of gravelling. "Mr Carter has completed his contract on the Moutere hills, but it is not^ yet passed. Information should be sent to the Moutere Road Board that as all the stuff from the cutting has been expended, they will have to make provision for carrying on the filling over the western culvert, which was understood in tho correspondence with the Government on the subject, and being beyond our boundary. " The time haying elapsed, viz , six months, for. the supply of horses and cart's in the different sub-districts, fresh tenders should be invited." Resolved, 'That application be made to Mrs Saxton for permission to continue the eloping of the bank in order to fill up tbe ditch, ami that if granted the fence by Biggar's.bo put up. That the improvements in Bridgo Valley be carried out on the terms named. That a one-foot' barrel drain be put in by Hoult's mill. That the Overseer make .an agreement for the gravelling in Eighty-eight Valley, and have the gorse by Wells' ploughed, up. That Mr Dron's offer to gravel the Aldourie road be accepted. That tenders be invited 1 by next month for supplying horses and carts. The tender for getting gravel, from Mr Rout's paddock, being considered too high, was declined j and tbat of Mr J. Cockram, for renting the Tollgate at £650, was accepted. Resolved, -That tbe. Resident Engineer be requested to represent tbe necessity of providing a crossing over the Railway at the public road near the Richmond wharf, where no such provision appears to have been made. The working plan and section for the proposed road, from Pigeon Valley to Dovedale having been examined, it was resolved, That tenders be invited for next meeting for forming, this road j each contract to be about half a mile long. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, requesting the Board to amend their statement of proposed works under the "Payment to Provinces" grant, as in consequence of instructions received from. the Colonial Government, one item, viz., "For gravelling formed road in Pigeon Valley towards Stanley Brook," could not be passed. It was therefore resolved to substitute, portions of the track, hitherto unformed, on the Moutere hills." Warrants were signed for £399 5s 4d.
