CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, April 2. Present : Messrs Baraicoat (chairman), Campbell, Simmons, Broad, Rout, Wastney, Tarrant, Shepherd, Garin, Mercer, Talbot, Greeufield, Kelling, FelJ, Wigzell, Jackson, Thorpe, Tunnieliff, Rose, and Smith. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The Inspector having recommended that assistance be granted to the inhabitants of the South Spit, Westport, who have built and furnished a schoolroom at their own expense, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Simmons, "That in consequence of the Inspector's report a subsidy at the usual rate be granted to the school at the South Spit." The Committee appointed to consider what amonnt of rent ought to be paid in future by the Central Board to the Trustees of the Nelson Society having resolved that £10 per annum would, in their opinion, be a fair rental, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Shephard, "That the report of the Committee be adopted, and that the Secretary be instructed to give effect , thereto through the Board's solicitors." The question of allowing a third teacher to St. Mary's Girls', School at a salary of £48 per annum was discussed. Mr Bout proposed as an amendment that the salary be £24; it was resolved, after a discussion, that the salary be £48, to begin April 1. Ayee, 8; Messrs Broad, Greenfield, Fell, Garin, Shephard, Wigzell, Kelling, Mercer. Noes, 7; Messrs Rouf, Wastney, Talbot, W. P. Smith, 1 arrant, Buddie, CampTL 11 bell. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Tunnicliff, after a division, that the salary of the assistant teacher at Upper Wakefield be increased from £24 to £36, Ayes, 8; Messrs Broad, Tunnicliff, Garin, Kelling, Mercer, Thorpe, Buddie, Campbell. Noes, 2; Messrs Tarrant, and Wastney. The lease of the Maitai reserve to Mr Richardson was signed. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Tarrant, " That Mr J. Parsons' application for a fourteen years' lease of the Ngatimoti reserve at a rental of £2 per annual be acceded to, on consideration that the land be fenced, and the fencing - left in good repair at the end of the term." j Resolved, on the motion of Tarrant, "That in the event of^hf Local Committees failing to cjleQt
judges . to join with the Inspector in awarding prizes in the coming competition among the best readers in the Provincial schools, the Inspector be authorised to invite any two persons to act in that capacity."" Resolved, on the motion of Mr Tarrant, "That the competitors for the reading prizes from the Motueka, Riwaka, and Dovedale districts be examined at the Lower Moutere school, as being the most central." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Rou', ''That a special committee be appointed to consider the finances for the ensuing year, including teachers' salaries, with the view of reporting to ibe Board at its next meeting; such Committee to consist of Meßsrs Thorpe, Shephard, Buddie, Simmons, Broad, Barnicoat, Garin, and the mover." " Notices of Motion. 1. Mr Simmons to move, " That, considering the increasing number of schools, and the consequent augmentation of clerical and inspecting work, the Inspector be not, for the future, required to visit any school more than twice in the course of each year." 2. Mr Rose to move, " That £5 additional be allowed to the Dovedale Committee to enable them to complete the building for the teacher."
