Meanwhile 300 tons of sugar and a large Quant tr of coal were thrown overboard, there being no means of landiDg it. The steamer floated off on the 7th instant, by herself, the Pearl having gone to Levuka. The Macgregor was taken into safe anchorage in Galoa Bay. She has a hole twelve feet by three feet in one of the forward compartments, which is full of water, but otherwise she is uninjured. She will be repaired as well as circumstances will permit, and then taken to Sydney. to be docked. The-proposed annexation of Fiji has been negatived by the King and leading chiefs assembled at Bau. . There will ba fresh elections. . .-,- New Plymodth, March 30. The Superintendent has received a letter stating that half tte proceeds from the sale of confiscated land would for th i future be banded over to the Province, the moiety of which was to be spent in the district where * the land is, the remainder by vote of the Council. , ' A testimonial was presented to-day to T. Kelly, Esq , M.H.R., by a number of friends and -constituents as a recognition of his services in Parliament in promoting the construction of the Waitara railway. Dunedin, March 30. Mr Macphereon, of Canterbury, addressed a public meeting on Saturday night. He said it wa.s folly of the Government to induce working-men to emigrate from Great Britain in euch large numbers. Oa returning to England he would tell them the truth, and give them words of caution. The North Dunedin telegraph station will be opened in a few weeks, with two lady operators. ■ ■'■ March 31. 129 more of the passengers who arrived by the Scimitar will be admitted to partique tomorrow. In the Supreme Court, in banco, Mr Newton for the llokitika Tramway Company appeared to show <ause against the rule ui-i in arrest of the judgment obtained at Nelson Mr South, for the Provincial Government, supported the rule.
