The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1874.
SrRiNO Gkove, — Io connection with the Wesley an Church anniversary, sermons will be preached at the Spring Grove Church to-morrow by tho Rev. T. Buddie. On Good Friday there will be a tea, and public meeting. Dinner to Mr Lowe. — We are requested to call attention to an alteration in the advertisement, by which it will be seen that the dinner to be giyen by the Caledonian Society to Mr Lowe has been postponed until Thursday evening. Artillery Entertainment. — The members of the Artillery Company and those who assisted them last night had no occasion to complain of want of public patronage, for ihe Hall was filled to overflowing, nor, if we may judge by the frequent applause, and the occasional shouts of hearty laughter had the audience any reason to regret the small cum it cost them to obtain entrance. The first part was devoted to songs and choruaee, of the former of i which, " The Star-spangled Banner " and " Ten thousand miles away," which was given as an encore, appeared to meet with most favor. A recitation consisting of selections from Macaulay's "Virginia" was given with much pathos and feeling, although we fancy we have heard the reciter to greater advantage in other pieces. In the melo-draraa " The Rover's Bride," moat valuable assistance was rendered by three young ladies, and the acting of nearly all who took part in it was well and spiritedly sustained throughout. Several selections were played by the band, and as an amateur entertainment we may safely say that that of last night was one of the most successful we have seen in Nelson. Volunteer Encampment, — The volunteers of this district purpose camping out at Richmond at Easter time, the head-quarters to be in a paddock belonging to Mr Sutton. The town companies will march out on Thursday evening next, and remain until the evening of Easier Monday, when they will march back to town. The Waimea Rifles will meet them at Richmond, and it is the intention of the Commanding Officer to make Easter Monday a review day. This, if the weather be fine, should attract a large number of visitors to the camp.
