WAIMEA-STREET SEWER.
To thb EdiTok of thh Evknino Mail. Sib— ln this evening's Mail it is stated that " the proposed outfall in this sewer attains its highest point at tho Bridge-street manhole." Thi3 l believe to be correct Why this highest point exists is this. In the alteration of the water-pipe it was not put down low enough for the invert brick to be level with the top of the flange of the pipe, and this necessitated nn alteration of tho levels some distance before it and the same distance after it. The flange of the pipe even now is two inches above the invert btick internally. This was the cause of the first digression of the original levels. The other alteration (at Patterson's corner) was in strict compliance with my orders, which were given so that an extra four inches and a half of space could be gainel in the crown of the culvert just where the tramway crosses, and where I had always foreseen a difficulty. I am, &c., Thomas Younger. March 27, 1874.
To the Editor of the Evening Mail. Sir — I think you are under Borne miuapprehension aa to the tenor of my report on the Waimea-street hewer. The opinions therein expressed by me were intended to apply to the sewer as built. Re/erence was made to a depression existing at Patterson's corner. My levels shew that this depression reaches its maximum under the tramway afc tins corner. In all matters of levels the section is the proper source ot information. Inference was made by me in my report to the section. I can only regret that it was not more carefully examined, when the whole facts of the case would have been clearly known to the Board. 1 am, &c, A. D. Austin.
