Whitconsb (Taranaki), is to be removed for trial to Nelson There has beon a good deal of negotiation going on to obviate the necessity of legal proceedings. The plaintiff is Mujcr Atkinson, one of the candidates for the Siiperin tendency of Taranaki. It is now stated that (he negotiations for settlement have falleu through, and application will be made to. the Chief •Justice to ehange the venue from Taranaki to Nelson. — Herald. . The Auckland Herald, referring to the exodus from . tbe Thames, to the Palmer River rush says:— -Tho .departure of eo many men irom the field is causing serious inconvenience, several important works remaining idle for want of labourers. Seven-and-sixpence and eight shillings per day of eight hour shifts ;is being offered, nnd meetiug with no response ; whilst contracts are only being taken at a rate equal to not less than 30 per cent, advance upon the current prices paid a few months ago. At the annual meeting of the members -of-the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, held on tho 28th ult., it was stated that one property ownor. .alone iu that Province had sustained a loss of £1000 through caterpillars .eating graes.*'* - * '• "■ '■■ -*,- \~JJ ,The Hawke's Bay Herald of March 10- gives the following description of the volunteer camp near Napier: — Long ere we reached the, scene of action, the rows bf white bell-tents gleamed conspicuously, in .thoiafternp.on's sun, and, on our arrival, *a very short time sufficed to show that everything connected with tha catering and. accommodation of our , ahticipatod' guests,. was "on th'eVev,e of completion. A large green .mea|ow has been selected for the camping ground*-, and, as far as can be judged, it would be a matter of no small difficulty to, discover; a more suitable spot; 4^iile in an adjoining paddock to'thelwestwar:d : tli'e targets have been erected. Standing *W the camping groundploofeing towards : the . targets, MMbhiface nearly duo east, the view ia very pleasing. The targets, five in number, are aiiiftted in the arc* of a crescent, a belt of bright green "willows immediately iri their rear, whilst tb-p range of hills stretching in a curve from right to left forma a substantial shelter from any boisterous winds from the north, west, and south. 'JThe. ground is sufficiently level for any purpose, and we anticipate . that' the advantageous position of the range will enable some unusually high scores to be made. We thon turned to inspect the accommodation provided for our guests, and in this respect also nothing seemed to be wanting. From forty to fifty bell-tents, with here and there a marquee on a sqaali scale, aro placed in rotvs, the camping ground occupying an area of 150 yards square, the mess tent ; and the kitchen being erected close together: In the kitchen, a commodious galvanised iron aud wood building, ah enormous stove at ouce attracted our attention, fitted up nc-. cording to order, and capable of preparing eatables of every description ad lib. In addition to the ordinary equipment. of saucepans, kettles,: &c, there iQ. a capacious iron vessel, admirably fitted up with six compartments • lo'r cooking vegetables, and ■usiUf a reser.voir constructed to receive and pook a score of turkeys at the same time, the other necessary utensils are likewise ■provided in large marquee, about 100 feot in length. A table abotit 90. feet long extends almost its entire length, whilst, at the upper end, an octagon bar is fitted up; and we : confidently predict that many a hearty ; menl will be eaten, and many a glass of beer quaffed within thesa canvas wails during the ■ next fort»ighti The marquee' just referred to is intended for..t.he„use of the Volunteers only, but a spacious rotuiKla is toi ,be erected, for, the ',- us© . .of Jthe gsperal i publj^ Watoi is provided
