To the Editor of the Evening Mail. Sir — The committee of Spring Grove school haa inserted an advertisement in your Monday's ießtie, which contains an implication I sboutd not like to,pass, \wanswered "Beatiijig about the head"; is a'phrase which, if truly descriptive of my treatment of the children entrusted to my charge, would infer me to be liable to an indictment for a ielonious assault of the worst' character; and this Bimguiimry prefix gives a tone of savage cruelty to the torms which fol'ow, "pulling the hair, ears, etc." Thus, by implication, I am suddenly, depicted as a ruthless savage exercising an ingenious malignity upon helpless children; 'such a jfellew-' as< Bhoiild be ostracised from civil society, find in whose condemnation none could more heartily join than myself. Now, from what has this implied accusation sprung ? I have been in the habit, wisely or unwisely, when a boy's attention, wandered from his lesson-teaming of gently drawing fails head in the proper direction by means of those tufts and appendages with which nature had furnished it, — an admonitory pull keeping, him straight to his books —but neither frequent or severe. And the first charge resolves itself into two eases, one seven yeus ago, and the other i eleven months, in which in inflicting punish* ment upon the back, the hoid, by the boy's movement, received an accidental stroke lam persuaded that no master enjoys a more cordial understanding with his Bcholars generally than mysslf—or utes physical correction of any kind so seldom. Every examiner that has visited my schoal has remarked upon the pleased and happy ex presdon in the faces of the scholars. But alas for the preceptor, when years of arduous and onerous labor only leave him a mark for such careless calumnies as these. I am, &c, The Teacher in Question.
