CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Tbe monthly meeting of tbe Beard was.Kojd yesterday. Present : Messra. Rout (Chairman), Campbell, Talbot, Garin, W. P. Smith, Buddie, Wastney, Wigzell, Mercer, Thorpe, Shephard. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The report of tho Committee on the Reading Priz-a was adopted. (Se© appendix.) An application from the Rev A. C. Soutar having been read, for a subsidy towards the maintenance of a school at the South Spit, Westport, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Wastney, that the Inspector visit the proposed school with the view of reporting to the Board at its next meeting. Resolved on the ncolion of Mr Wigzell, "That the question of tbe amount of rent to be paid to the Nelson School Society in future in consideration of the Board's surrendering the school rooms in Bridge-street, be deferred until next month." Resolved on the motion of Mr Wastney, "That a Committee to consist of Messrs Rout, Wigzell, and Shephard, be appointed to consider the above question, and to report to the Board at its next meeting." The following notices of motion were given.— 1. By the Rev A. M. Garin, « That an additional assistant teacher at £24 per annum be allowed at St, Mary's Girls' School from April Ist, the daily attendance for last quarter being 112." 2. By Mr Tunnicliff, "That Miss TunniclfFs salary be raised from £24 to £36 from April 1." The Board then adjourned until Thursday, the 2nd of April."
[Appendix.] Recommendations of the Committeo appointed to consider the best method of awarding the priz.B offered by the Central Board for the encouragement of reading and elocution, adopted by the Board : — a. That the children in the Home Districts be assembled for competition at five centres, viz:— . 1. Bridge-street fchool, for all who attend the Town and Suburban North schoois. 2. Richmond school, for all who attend the Stoke, Richmon t, Hope, Ranzau, and Waimea West schools. 3. Lower Wakefield school, for all win tUt.nd the schools South of the Wairoa. • 4. Motueka school, for all who attend the Moutere, Motueka, Riwnkn, Pangatotara, Ngatimoti and Dovedale schools. 5. Takaka school, for all who attend the Takaka, Motupipi, Long Plain and Collingwood schools. b. That as no convenient centre can be found for the candidates on the West C r ast, the best readers be selected by the Inspector on his next vitit, as he proceeds Irom school to school. c. That the other schools be examined during the month of April by a Committeo consieting of the Inspector and two judges, to be appointed for each centre by tho Local Committees interested. d. That twelve prizes should be given in all, a first and second prize for each centre. c. lint candid \tes be tested by a passage of prose and one of poetry, not notified beforehand. J. That no school be allowed to send more than two candidates of each sex g. Th»t candidates should be under filteen years of age, and should have attended a Nelgon public school for at least twelve months previous to tho examination.
