Auckland, March 4. The Tartar has just arrived from Kandavau. TheMacgregor went ashore at Kandavau, and hrr passengers and cargo were transshipped into the Tartar and Star of the South. The Tartar has the Australian mails, and proceeds to Sydney this evening. 12"46 p.m. The Mikado with the outward mails, left Kandavau on the 28rd of February, for San Francisco. The Macgregor arrived thsre.on the 25th, from San Francisco. The pilot Baid he could take both steamers to sea by the Star of the South, leading the way, but the Macgregor struck on a shoal inside the reef. The Tartar tried to tow her off, and parted all her best hawsers. Ninety tons of cargo were then taken out to lighten her for the night tide, when the Tartar again made fast, and for three hours tried to tow her off without avail. It was then thought advisable to remove more coal, and make another trial in daylight, which was again unsuccessful. It win? then considered inexpedient to make any further t-ial until the was thoniughly lightened forward. The mails and passengers wtro transferred to ihe Ta.tur. Captain Giainger iocoiifidt-nt th'it, upon removing the coals and cargo, the ship will float off. '1 hs bo c blamt; ot the mi«hap is attributable to the pilot, as the entrance is perfectly safe. ! 1-50 p.m. The mails per Tartar will take 30 hours to sort, ull bi-ing mixed, as there was no mailagent on board. No letters are delivered yet. The Lady Bird sails at 8 a.m. (to-mojrow?) with the .mails and passengers for the South. Ihe Tartar brings no files, but only a few loose papers. The barque Anazi arrived in harbor last evening in tow of the steamer Golden Crown. The enquiry will be held to-day or to morrow. Wellington, March 3. The Mongol Commission rose to-day after deciding not to sit again until the arrival of the immigrants who are en route by the Phoebe, and ;are now detained at Lyttelton. It is said that the evidence taken lately has not been of the most satisfactory kind as to the supervision or want of it on the voyage. # Dunbdin, March 4. Re the Dunedln races.
