RIFLE COMPETITION.

The spcond competition for the Snyder rifle took place at the Maitai butts yesterday morning. The followiug aro the scores : —

She returns to Wellington at five o'clock this afternoon. Mdlle. Jenny Claus. — We learn that tbis talented violinist, who has recently created so great a sensation in the Australian colonies, will visit Nelson about (he middlo of next month. Good Templars. — In consequence of Mr Mackuue being unable to como over in the Alhtpbra there will ba uo special lodge meeting this evening. Mr Mackune will be here in about a week, when he will hold meetings in the town and the principal country districts with a view to opening additional lodges. Volunteers.— Tho members of the Artillery and City Rifle Companies mustered for battallion drill yesterday evening, and went through a variety of manoeuvres to the entire satisfaction of Major Gordon who was in command. A Church pat ade has been ordered for Sunday morning, when the members of the various Companies will assemble at the Drill Shed, and from thence march to Christ Church. Brunner Coal Mine — We understand'that a disturbance has occurred at this mine, the men having refused to proceed with their work on the ground that the lessees insist upon making a drive of so great a width as to be positively dangerous. Full particulars are not yet to hand. Coroner's Inquest. — An inquest was held yesterday on the body of an infant named Edward JCearse Stagg, aged 11 months. From the evidence it appeared that the deceased, who was suffering from diarrhoea, was taken on Wednesday to Mr Waring, at Richmond, who advised the mother to bring it in to town to Dr. Farrelle. She did so, and the child died shortly after reaching his house without being seen by him. A verdict was returned to the effect that deceased died of infantile diarrhcea. Waimea South Steeplechase.—Tbe Grand Stand, sites for booths, gates, and right to sell cards, will be sold by auction by Messrs Stavert and Co. at the Forest Inn to-raorrow.
