The following^ remarks were lately •fa^enby; Mr *Mundel.a;{ M;P;* in a >■ speech delivered at Sheffield, referring to the supply and consumption of meat in the United Kingdom:—-There are few questions which are c-fsuch interest ! and importance to the peb pie of this country as the question of food supply. We have to-day a population of thirtytwo millions. We have doubled our numbers* since "the- beginning ".of: the present century, and there are some j wbo are listening to me who will pro- ', bably see ouf "population augmented to fifty millions. How are these mouths < to be fed? You will have Been from: tbe statistics I haVe quoted that the in- | creased consumption of meat in the past two years is fully 330,000,0001bs weight, and of the value of £13,000,000 sterling. What wili it be as the country continues to increase in rpopulation and prosperity? The area of land in this country is a fixed quantity; indeed I might, without impropriety l, say that: it is a diminishing quantity, for as population increases, railways, towns, and manufactures extend and diminish the area of cultivable land. Unless,. therefore, we can greatly increase the' production of the soil in this country,! we must depend entirely upon imports ! for the vast and daily increasing wants of our people. : ~y *,;*..';
