. .'i" 1 * '".'.. JJ J- Wellington, February 7. The Immigrants per Ocean Mail landed to-day. February 9. Whilst the correspondence was proceeding between the General Government, and. the Provincial Government of ;Wellihgton upon the subject of bridges, roads, and other works, and the Ordinance lately passed by the Provincial / Council appropriating about £50,006 on account of an anticipated loan, it was discovered that the Provincial, Auditor had signed a warrant for .the .Whole amount appropriated. This is likely to lead to his dismissal, and it is also probable that tbe Ordinance will be disallowed. Auckland, Feb. 9, 8.10 a.m. Arrived on Saturday evening the ship Wave Queen from London, after a voyage of 115 days. She brings 15 saloon and 18 steerage passengers. Mr Hurst has bought Mr Graham's imported ram and ewe for £120. The Police have memorialised for increased pay. There has been a tremendous gale, during which the steamer Challenger was run into by the schooner Dauntless which broke loose. The steamer was emashed against the wharf, and sank, a complete wreck. The English barque Lauderdale broke from her moorings and smashed into the wharf several feet. The new schooner Coralie had her stern completely smashed off. The cutter Aaron and several cargo boats •sunk. The sleamer Devenport had her paddle boxes smashed. The schooners Dauntless and Gemini, and other vessels had their bulwarks much broken The ship Chile broke away from tbe wharf, but ber anchors pulled her up. A yacht sunk off the North Head, but her tour occupants were rescued. Dr Piison reported all well on board the Wave Queen, but the gale is too severe for the Customs boat to return. The Wave Queen is all right. She came ap the harbor yesterday. No further damage has been caused. That in town is trifling. The walls of Masefield's foundry fell and crushed the roof of an adjoining cottage. The inmates were in another part of the house and' were not injured. The estimated damage is now fixed &t £1O;OO0. The steamer Challenger is completely- smashed up, and a cutter is # unk on top of her.
11,15 a.m. A seaman belonging to the Wave Queen named Richard Knott was drowned while endeavoring to rescue the crew of the cutter Challenger. George Arno, one of tho Challenger's crew, was also drowned. The Challenger was wrecked on the Rangitoto and the men clung to the rocks until the two mentioned were washed off in an exhausted state. A man named Washington ia believed to be lost "from the yacht Columbia which was wrecked at tbe Breakwater. Four Maoris are also reported to be lost. The ' Cross ' estimates the damage done by the gale to the shipping and in city the at £12,390 Lyttelton, February 9. Dr Wilmshurst of the Isles of the South is arrested on a warrant for embezzling medical comforts and selling them. Dunedin, February 9. The report of the Benevolent Institution states tbattherß is an inmate 116 years of age. Port Chalmers, Feb. 9. The Mikado arrived at 9 o'clock last night having made the run from Melbourne in 4 days 23 hours. She was detained in a fog off the coast for seven hours.
