Thursday, February 5. Present : Messrs Barnicoat (Chairman), Tarrant, W. P. Smith, Burn, Wastney, Campbell. Talbot, Rout, Thorpe, Shephard, Percy, Wigzell, Rose, Masters. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed The revision of the Bye-laws waa completed, aud the Secretary was instructed to have slips printed, embodying the additions to the Bye-laws, for insertion in the books containing the Rules and Bye-laws of the Board Resolved, on the motion of Mr Campbell, "That from April 1, 1874, a salary of £i.O a year only be allowed to the teachers of Clifton Terrace and Takaka schools, in consequence of the smallneas of the attendance ai those schools ior the past six months." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Thoppe,- --" That the Secretary suggest for the consideration ot the above Committees the desirability of employing a mistress instead of a master in each case when making new appointments." Rcolved, on the motion of Mr ••'ose, 'That £5 be granted as a contribution towards the building of a chimney at Dovedale." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Campbell, " That the sum of £10 be set apart this year for prizes for reading and elocution in the Provincial schools." Resolved on the motion of Mr Thorpe, " That a Committee, consisting of Messrs Barnicoat, Rout, Campbell, the Secretary, and the mover, be appoint, d, to consider the best method of giving effect to tbe above •esolu 1 ion, such committee to report to the Board at next meeting." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wa*?tney, "That the programme for this year's examinations, as proposed by Messrs Simmons and Hodgson, the examiners for the Provincial and Governors' Scholarships, be adopted and printed, together with the instructions prepared by the Examiners for the use of teachers, supervisors, and candidates." A memorial signed by 34 residents in tbe Amuri district was read, requesting the Board Neither to constitute the Amuri an. educational distriot, or otherwise to provide such schools ai]d teachers as the Board may think the district requires." The Secretary was instructed to ascertain : 1 st. What boundaries are proposed by the memorialists, if the Amuri is to be constituted an educational district. 2nd. If there are children enough of school age within three miles of the proposed site of the school to bring tbe district within rule 40 of the bye-laws, which states that " the Board will not undertake to establish a school ia any districts where, within a distauee of three miles from the intended site of the school-house, there are not 20 children between the ages of 5 ond 14." 3rd. What amount would be contributed by the inhabitants towards the erection and maintenance of a school in the township of Wai-au, if the plan of granting a subsidy be adflpted' by the Board. A letter was read from Mr W. C, Roberts, . requesting the Board to cancel his tenders for leases of certain sections in Westport, upon hi- paying the expenses that have already been incurred in the matter. The Sf pretary was instructed to explain to Mr Roberts, through the Board's Solicitors, that he must either carry out his bargain in it§ integrity, or submit to arbitration the anjount of damage that the Board has sustained through the non-fulfilment of his contract. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wastney, " That an assistant teacher, at £50 p^r annum, be substituted for a monitor at Westport, in consequence of the greatly increased attendance."
