IS THE CAMPION SUBSCRIPTION A PARTY MOVEMENT?
To THE EdMOJ? OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir—l grieve to say that there ip a certain number of people, and among these eyen men of po-ition, who discredit the Campion subscription. Ihey report it to be apait/ movement of one class of the community against the other. As the treasurer of the Campion fund, and in the absence of the gentleman collectors who are taking so autfjre a part in this benevolent object, I consider ifc my duty absolutely to contradict the report made against; us. It is utterly untrue in itself, it is an unjust occupation against the collectors who neither collectively or individually, as far as I know, have done anything to deserve the imputation of creating ill-feelings against any man or class of men. Further the current report can have no other effect thau to do a grieyous injury to the object in view. It will discourege charitable people from contributing towards the support of helpless and innocent sufferers. Ihe object of the Campion movement is nothing eiee but charity, the only intention of the projectors in starting the subscription was charity alone. Tne collectors (who have coipniunica.ted wifcti me) are grateful for the spirit of charity with which many have received and encouraged them; end they trust confidently that those who have' not vet been called upon may be acjbuajted by the ftanie Christian hpirit, " Charity thinketh no evij. Si Asking you kindly to flud a place in your columns lor this letter, I am, &c, J. N. Binsfeld, Treasurer of the Campion Fund, Nelson, February 4.
