The judgment given in reference to the Surat enquiry was long and elaborate. The magistrates held that the master was culpable in starting from London with the ship in an unseaworthy condition, and without charts of New Zealand coast, and in not taking proper precautions afcer making land. That the master, mate, and second officer were most blameable in not endeavoring to lessen the leak; in not securing the services of the Wanganui steamer when passing; in rendering themselves unfit for their duties by insobriety, and in making no effort after beaching the vessel to save the immigrants' effects. The Magistrates therefore cancelled the certificates of Edward Joseph Johnston, master, Abraham Foresliaw, chief officer, aud gspended for two years the certificate of competency of Edward Hesselton, second mate. The question of the right of passengers per Surat to their luggage will be brought before the Supreme Court in a few days. It is thought that the captain of the Surat will be criminally prosecuted. The police expenditure in this province during 1873 was £19,221. The northern and southern escorts brought down 21,233 ounces of gold. Port Chalmers, January 20. The Gothenburg has just arrived in tow of the Tararua. On the day she left the Bluff, the 14th, she broke the air pump of the starboard engine; She then worked the engine at low pressure and the other at high pressure, and tbe steamer went along very well at about 7 knots until 9 p.m. the following day, when the engines were brought up all standing, and on examination it was found that the stern bush was fouled, and it is supposed that the shaft has broken inside the bush, as it will not move.
