The New Zealand Shipping Company despatched during the month of December eight ships, including the Mongol, which alone was expected to carry 600 emigrants. Dunedin, January 16. Mr Yogel left overland for Christchurch yesterday. He will reach Oamaru to-day, and Christjchurch about Monday. The Presbyterian Synod have met, and will probably discuss the Education question. The value of the Surat's cargo as entered at the Customs at London was £23,700, including railway iron. Several new contracts for railways in this province, extending over sixty miles, will be entered into by the end of the month. £662 have been collected for the relief of the jSurat sufferers. A burglar forced himself into the house of the Hon James Paterson, but was surprised by the servant maid, whom he threatened to shoot. The girl screamed, and Mrs Paterson rushed from her bedroom and seized the ruffian, and held him till Mr Paterson came to the rescue and overpowered him.
