Wellington, January 8

A meeting of gentlemea was held in connection with the presentation of a testimonial to the late Mayor. Two gentlemen were instructed to canvass the town, and they collected £80 during a few hours to-day.

Private letters from Levuka, dated December 29, from an officer on board 11. M.S. Pearl, state that H.M.S. Blanche was to proceed from Levuka to act as the senior officer's ship in New Zealand.

The Gas Company have reduced the price to per cent, or to 11s per 1000 feet. The Inspector of Police has taken criminal proceedings against Kawaoa Hernia, and Puke, two ot the chief disturbers at Horowhenua, for burning huts and pulling up crops. Twenty-four of the most respectable hotelkeepers have resolved to form themselves into a Licensed Victuallers' Association, and havo pledged themselves to abstain from serving refreshments on Sunday to others than bona fide boarders, and to compel the other hotelkeepers to desist from Sunday trading.

The grain market is unsettled. Buyers here Ooer 4s. for new wheat, and 2s. 3d. to 2s. 6d. for oats. Very little is offering. Cheese, sd. to 6d ; butter, 6Jd to 7d ; hams and bacon, B£d, free on board.

At a meeting: of the Central Bmting Club, It was resolved that all Champion races may be rowed with or without coxswains. The prizes will be liberal. Three Canterbury boats will probably enter for the big event.
