Twenty-four of the most respectable hotelkeepers have resolved to form themselves into a Licensed Victuallers' Association, and have pledged themselves to abstain from serving refreshments on Sunday to others than bona fide boarders, and to compel the other hotelkeepers to desist from Sunday trading. Christchurch, January 8. The Provincial Council last night voted £500 for the importation of insectivorous birde. Several alterations have been made in the team selected to play against Otago, but without effecting any improvement. The three best batsmen will be unable to go with the team. Dunedin. January 8. Catherine M'Donald, for the manslaughter of John Briggs, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. All of the single immigrants per Surat have found employment at good wages. The Superintendent and Executive proceed to the Waikato on Friday to turn the first sod of the railway extension from Mercer to Ngaruawahia. At the annual meeting of the Orange Lodge last night, delegates from the Thames, Coromandel, Waikato, and Napier, were present. The new officers were appointed. A banquet was held afterwards. In a ca c of cattle-stealing, which had occupied the Court all day, it was found, after a verdict of guilty had been returned, that one juryman had served in place of another, having mistaken the name. Mr Redwood has purchased from Mr Watt the celebrated racing stallion Totara, by Diomedes, out of Waimea, for 500 guineas. Mr Redwood takes the horse to Nelson to use for stud purposes. An arrangement lias also been effected between these large owners of race horses by which Mr Watt has purchased half of Mr Redwood's stock of two-year olds by Ravensworth, also half his horses in training. This arrangement has been effected with the intention of entering the horses for the Victoria races. Alexandra, January 7. .
