..,,, PROVINCIAL. Napier, January 7. The annual Earn Fair is to be held at Havelock on the 1 1th February. Danedin, January 7. The banquet to Mr Vogel was an immense success. The Superintendent was in the chair, and the Governor sat next to Mr Vogel. The Mayor and lending citizens -ware present. The Chairman said that £500 had been subscribed for the purchase of a piece of plate as a testimonial to Mr Vogel, who spoke for over an hour, and reviewed the whole position and affairs of the colony, especially the progress of the different railways, and showed that great misapprehension existed regarding the indebtedness of the Colony. Besides, if the debt was large, the people were batter enabled to pay interest upon it than upon previous indebtedness if there had been no Public Works, but New Zealand should control all the South Sea Islands' trade. He was enthusiastically cheered on sitting down, At a meeting of the Surat Relief Committee, held: yesterday, it was resolved to collect £500 for distribution among the married people only. The estimated losses of the passengers are £2;500. One man had 264 sovereigns in his box. The passengers luggage and effects were sold with the wreck, notwithstanding a protest made by some of the passengers against such a proceeding. The official enquiry commences to-morrow. ' Strange rumors are afloat concerning the conduct of the captain and first and second officers. A number of steamers have left for the wreck with a view of saving as much as possible. If the fine weather last, it is believed that it will be got off in ten days. Several passengers by the Surat have been admitted to the hospital, suffering from illness brought on by exposure. Private advices state that the Mongol left London for this port direct on December 23. Christchurch, January 7. It is rumored that the Hon E. W. Stafford is coming forward to contest the Superintendency. Mr John Ollivier, the Provincial Auditor, will be asked to offer himself, and it is reported that a number of gentlemen have offered to guarantee his expenses. At the Supreme Court, John Walsh, for larceny from the person, was sentenced to seven years; Antonio Jonson, for assault with intent, to two years; Peter Johnen. for larceny, one year: Alexander M'Lellan, for larceny of a cheque, one year. This concluded the criminal session.
